Quantum fluctuations in the optical parametric oscillator in the limit of a fast decaying subharmonic mode

Abstract

The quantum fluctuations in a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator are calculated without the standard linearization assumption. Analytical results are obtained with the help of a mean-field approximation, which is exact in the limit of a fast decaying subharmonic mode. This approach is equivalent to a linearization around a self-consistently determined pump field amplitude that takes into account fluctuations of the subharmonic mode. The range of validity of the mean-field approximation is analyzed, and the influence of the system size on field amplitudes and squeezing is discussed.

We study the nondegenerate parametric oscillator in the limit of small fluctuations where a linearized theory is valid. Interest is focused on solutions above threshold. It has been shown that the field undergoes phase diffusion above threshold,1 and the theory incorporates this effect. We calculate the spectrum of fluctuations in the intensity difference between the two modes,2 allowing for differing cavity mode decay rates. Possibilities for quantum nondemolition experiments and other quantum properties are discussed. In particular, the effect of phase diffusion on the long-time heterodyne squeezing spectra is calculated. The linearized results are compared to the full nonlinear steady-state solutions in the limit of a very fast decaying pump.

Pump fluctuations, phase mismatch, and detuning from resonances in the formation of quantum states of a nondegenerate resonant parametric oscillator

А. В. Белинский

The evolution of quantum fields in a three-resonator optical parametric oscillator is analyzed. It is shown that the frequencies of the emitted waves may be stabilized if the influence of the phase mismatch is compensated by suitable changes in the optical length of the resonator. Spectra of the signal intensity fluctuations are calculated and investigated taking into account various destabilizing factors.

Analysis of quantum noise in a singly resonant nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator

Kahraman G. Köprülü

We have analyzed the evolution of quantum operators in a three-wave mixing process by using the nonlinear polarization driven wave equations and linearization of the quantum operators. We have theoretically shown that a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier can generate amplitude-squeezed light when operated in the backconversion regime. Furthermore, a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator, where only the signal wave is resonant, is proved to generate amplitude-squeezed light when the pump intensity is above the value at which 100% photon conversion efficiency is achieved. The calculated limit for amplitude-squeezing in this case is 3 d B.

Quantum-nondemolition measurement and squeezing in type-II harmonic generation with triple resonance

Z. Y. Ou

Classical and quantum fluctuations are analyzed in the system of type-II harmonic generation where two frequency-degenerate subharmonic fields with orthogonal polarizations are required for the generation of a harmonic field. The two subharmonic fields as well as the harmonic fields are on resonance in a cavity. It is found that there is no self-pulsing behavior as predicted for the type-I case where the intensities of both the subharmonic and the harmonic fields undergo fast oscillation. Instead there exists a threshold that is identified as the onset of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) formed by a subharmonic mode with its polarization orthogonal to the input polarization (not the original modes). When the loss for the harmonic field is small, most of the input power is converted to the output power of the OPO. Under this circumstance, quantum-nondemolition measurements of the input can be performed at certain frequencies. The spectra of squeezing are calculated for the two subharmonic modes and it is found that both modes are squeezed for a certain range of frequency. The output of the OPO is found to exhibit phase squeezing.

Quantum noise and squeezing in an optical parametric oscillator with arbitrary output-mirror coupling. III. Effect of pump amplitude and phase fluctuations

Sudhakar Prasad

Quantum fluctuations and squeezing of the signal field generated by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator are sensitive to the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the second-harmonic pump. The analysis reported here extends our previous calculations for a perfectly monochromatic noise-free pump to allow for finite pump amplitude and phase fluctuations. We treat the typically intense pump field with its fluctuations as a classical Gaussian stochastic process in two limits: first, when the pump has amplitude fluctuations but its phase is fixed and second, when its phase diffuses but its amplitude is fixed. Since pump amplitude noise affects the evolution of the signal field multiplicatively, it has a lesser impact on the quantum fluctuations of the signal than pump phase diffusion which compromises such fluctuations via the extreme phase sensitivity of the parametric amplification process. For the latter limit, our calculations extend the work of Gea-Banacloche and Zubairy [Phys. Rev. A 42, 1742 (1990)] to cavities with arbitrary transmission coefficients for the bounding mirrors.

Theory of quantum fluctuations of optical dissipative structures and its application to the squeezing properties of bright cavity solitons

Isabel Pérez–Arjona, Eugenio Roldán, Germán J. de Valcárcel

We present a method for the study of quantum fluctuations of dissipative structures forming in nonlinear optical cavities, which we illustrate in the case of a degenerate, type I optical parametric oscillator. The method consists in (i) taking into account explicitly, through a collective variable description, the drift of the dissipative structure caused by the quantum noise, and (ii) expanding the remaining---internal---fluctuations in the biorthonormal basis associated to the linear operator governing the evolution of fluctuations in the linearized Langevin equations. We obtain general expressions for the squeezing and intensity fluctuations spectra. Then we theoretically study the squeezing properties of a special dissipative structure, namely, the bright cavity soliton. After reviewing our previous result that in the linear approximation there is a perfectly squeezed mode irrespective of the values of the system parameters, we study which are the better squeezed modes at the different bifurcations that the cavity soliton can suffer, as well as the squeezing level attainable when the homodyne detection is made with a plane-wave local oscillator field. In this last case, the squeezing level is quite large in most of the existence domain of the cavity soliton. We then take into account the effect of the detector size and find that, in general, squeezing degrades as the detector is made smaller, except for detector sizes around the cavity soliton size, in which case there is an interesting deviation from the general trend.
