Abstract

A scheme for optical bistability (OB) is proposed, in which the atom is in a four-level tripod configuration and driven by a single elliptically polarized light. It is demonstrated that the behaviors of OB can be controlled efficiently by adjusting the system parameters appropriately. Moreover, phase-controlled OB can be realized as well.

Phase control of optical bistability and multistability in a tripod four-level atomic medium

Optical bistability and multistability behaviors are investigated in a tripod four-level atomic configuration, including a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that optical bistability and multistability can be obtained by changing the relative phase of the driven fields and the intensity of the microwave field. In addition, we can switch optical bistability to optical multistability by adjusting the relative phase of the driven fields or vice versa, and the threshold can be controlled via changing the parameters of the scheme.

In this paper we investigate the optical properties of an open four-level tripod atomic system driven by an elliptically polarized probe field and compare its properties with the corresponding closed system. Our results reveal that absorption, dispersion, group velocity, and optical bistability of the probe field can be manipulated by adjusting the phase difference between the two circularly polarized components of a single coherent field and cavity parameters, i.e., the atomic exit rate from cavity and atomic injection rates.

Multiple spontaneously generated coherence and phase control of optical bistability and multistability in a tripod four-level atomic medium

Huijing Li, Hongjun Zhang, Hui Sun +3 more

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors induced by multiple spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) are investigated theoretically in a tripod four-level atomic scheme. It is found that OB or OM is sensitive to the SGC effects, and the thresholds of OB can be controlled via changing the strength of multiple SGC or the relative phases of the applied fields. In addition, we can switch OB to OM by adjusting the twofold relative phases of the applied fields or vice versa.

Toggle switch from optical bistability to multistability via an elliptically polarized field

In this paper, we propose a scheme for manipulating the behavior of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in an N-type four-level atomic system. In the scheme, quantum interference is optimized by the left-handed and the right-handed fields of an elliptically polarized field (EPF). The threshold and the hysteresis cycle shape of OB and OM can be controlled by modulating the intensity of the EPF. Especially, the transition from OB to OM or vice versa can also be easily realized by proper tuning the phase difference between the left-handed and right-handed polarized fields under the optimal intensity of the EPF.

Controllable optical bistability and multistability in a double two-level atomic system

Jing Wu, Xin‐You Lü, Lili Zheng

We theoretically investigate the behaviour of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in a generic double two-level atomic system driven by two orthogonally polarized fields (a π-polarized control field and a σ-polarized probe field). It is found that the behaviour of OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity or the frequency detuning of the control field. Interestingly enough, our numerical results also show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the relative phase between the control and probe fields. This investigation can be used for the development of new types of devices for realizing an all-optic switching process.

Controllable Optical Bistability and Multistability in a Four-Level Atomic System with Closed-Loop Configuration

Xin‐You Lü, Jiahua Li, Ji-Bing Liu

We theoretically investigate optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) behaviour of a closed-loop configuration atomic system driven by a degenerate coupling field and a degenerate probe field inside a unidirectional ring cavity. It is found that the OB and OM behaviour can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field, respectively. Interestingly, our numerical results show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field under a appropriate frequency detuning. The effect of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OB behaviour is also discussed.
