Abstract

A three-level ladder-type system with vacuum-induced coherence and incoherent pumping is studied to obtain a high refractive index without absorption. It is shown that the enhancement of the refractive index without absorption can be accomplished by choosing the proper values of the incoherent pumping, the angle between the two dipole moments, the probe detuning and the relative phase of the two coherent fields.

High refractive index without absorption via spontaneously generated coherence and incoherent pumping

Olimpia Budrigă

We studied a closed three-level V-type system with two near-degenerate excited levels in the presence of an incoherent pumping field. Quantum interferences of the two-decay channels lead to the achievement of the high index of refraction without absorption via spontaneously generated coherence. We use the exact analytical formula of the refractive index derived by us in a recent paper. We found that the high refractive index varies very much with the angle between the two dipole moments and evidently with the detuning of the coupling field.

High refractive index without absorption via spontaneously generated coherence in a three-level ladder system

Sulagna Dutta

A large refractive index without absorption in a closed three-level ladder system with incoherent pumping in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is investigated. It has been found that a large refractive index without absorption can be obtained by choosing proper system parameters. The maximum value of refractive index at vanishing absorption depends on the strength of the SGC parameter.

Enhanced refractive index without absorption via both coherent and incoherent fields in a semiconductor quantum well

We investigate the absorptive–dispersive properties of a weak probe field in a ladder-type semiconductor quantum well. It is found that the enhanced positive or negative refraction index without absorption can be easily obtained in this solid-state system. Our scheme may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in solid-state optical communication.

Effects of decay-induced coherence and microwave-induced coherence on the index of refraction in a three-level Λ-type atomic system

Weihua Xu, Jin‐Hui Wu, Jin-Yue Gao

We study the dispersion-absorption properties in a three-level Λ-type atomic system with two closely lying lower levels. We consider two schemes: in the first, the two lower levels are coupled by decay-induced coherence, and in the second, quantum coherence is created by coupling the two lower levels to each other by a microwave field. We found that due to the decay-induced coherence or microwave-induced coherence, the dispersion-absorption properties can be controlled by the relative phase of applied fields, large index of refraction without absorption always can be obtained just by choosing proper values of the relative phase.

Effect of Incoherent Pumping on Phase-dependent Absorption Property of Atomic Systems

Fan Xi-jun

In the open and closed ladder systems with vacuum induced coherence,it is found that the relative phase between the probe and driving fields has an important manipulation role on the absorption property, while the incoherent pumping has a considerable effect on the phase-dependent absorption property. In both systems,by adjusting the incoherent pumping the switching from absorption to gain and from lasing with inversion to lasing without inversion can be realized and the largest inversionless gain can be gotten. However, when the incoherent pumping is absent, for any value of the relative phase, lasing without inversion still can not be obtained in the closed system but it is able in the open system;and in the open system, for suitable values of the relative phase, inversionless gain gotten when the incoherent pumping is absent is obviously larger than that obtained when the incoherent pumping presents.

Pumped quantum systems: Immersion fluids of the future?

Vikas Anant, Magnus Rådmark, Ayman F. Abouraddy +2 more

Quantum optical techniques may yield immersion fluids with high indices of refraction without absorption. We describe one such technique in which a probe field experiences a large index of refraction with amplification rather than absorption, and examine its practicality for an immersion lithography application. Enhanced index can be observed in a three-level system with a tunable near-resonant coherent probe and incoherent pump field that inverts the population of the probe transition. This observation contradicts the common belief that large indices of refraction are impossible without absorption; however, it is well in accord with existing electromagnetic theory and practice. Calculations show that a refractive index ⪢2 is possible with practical experimental parameters. A scheme with an incoherent mixture of pumped and unpumped atoms is also examined, and is seen to have a lower refractive index (∼2) accompanied neither by gain nor loss.
