Abstract

A distributed balancing method for single-pass quantum cryptographic systems with phase encoding has been proposed. This method allows completely automated balancing, is quite universal, and can be used in other optical experiments.

Integration of quantum cryptography into fiber-optic telecommunication systems

S. N. Molotkov

The prototype of a new quantum cryptosystem is described. Such a cryptosystem is naturally called time-shift quantum cryptography. It realizes all basic quantum-cryptography protocols [BB84, B92, BB84(4+2)] in a common fiber-optic system. This scheme does not involve Mach-Zehnder interferometers, which enables one to naturally realize the multiplex mode of secure key distribution and to naturally integrate this quantum-cryptography scheme into traditional fiber-optic telecommunication systems. The proposed time coding method in quantum cryptography makes it possible to significantly simplify experimental schemes and to exclude the finest fiber-optic part, the interferometer. In essence, the fundamental difference of the time coding method from the phase coding method is that the part using phase relations in superposition between “parts” of a quantum state is eliminated from the phase-coding method, and only the part using the time division principle is retained. The time division principle is common for both methods and is minimally necessary, in contrast to the phasecoding method, which can be excluded altogether. The proposed scheme is briefly compared with the two most developed phase-coding schemes (without self-compensation and with passive self-compensation).

Control of distributed interference in the one-way quantum cryptography system

Kirill A. Balygin, Andrey N. Klimov, S. P. Kulik +1 more

The possibility of controlling interference in two spaced fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometers and maintaining a nearly ideal visibility has been demonstrated for the one-way quantum cryptography system directly in the key distribution process through a communication channel with a length of 50 km. It has been shown that the deviation of the visibility from ideal is certainly due to the detected difference between the numbers of 0’s and 1’s in the raw (sifted) key. For this reason, an interferometer can be balanced only in the quasi-singlephoton mode without the interruption of the process of key distribution by using the difference between the numbers of 0’s and 1’s in the raw key as an indicator of an error. The proposed approach reduces the balancing time and, furthermore, does not require additional exchanges through an open communication channel.

Simple delay scheme for quantum cryptography based on a Mach-Zehnder optic fiber interferometer

S. N. Molotkov

A simple experimental scheme is proposed for a relativistic quantum cryptosystem based on a Mach-Zehnder optic fiber interferometer. In this scheme, quantum mechanical laws, along with the restrictions imposed by the Special Relativity, ensure the detection of any eavesdropping attempt.

A new combined phase-time encoding method is proposed for fiber optic quantum cryptography systems. Preliminary estimates are given for the probability of the critical error to which cryptographic key distribution is possible.

S. P. Kulik, S. N. Molotkov

A method for the stabilization of the visibility of interference in fiber optic quantum cryptography has been proposed. This method allows “on-line” balancing of spatially separated interferometers without interruption of key distribution.

Active stabilization of the optical part in fiber optic quantum cryptography

Kirill A. Balygin, Andrey N. Klimov, S. P. Kulik +1 more

The method of active stabilization of the polarization and other parameters of the optical part of a two-pass fiber optic quantum cryptography has been proposed and implemented. The method allows the completely automated maintenance of the visibility of interference close to an ideal value ( V ≥ 0.99) and the reduction of the instrumental contribution to the error in primary keys (QBER) to 0.5%.
