A probabilistic computation method for the weight distribution of low-density parity-check codes

Abstract

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes achieve outstanding performance by the sum-product decoder. Its performance approaches the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding performance at high SNR region. Upper bounds on the error probability of the ML decoded LDPC codes can be computed using the weight distribution. Recently, X.-Y. Hu et al. presented an approximate algorithm for estimating the weight distribution of LDPC codes. However, the weight distribution computed by their method depends on the iterative decoding algorithm, and is not always estimated exactly. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic method for computing the low-part weight distribution of LDPC codes. Using our method, the approximate weight distribution of LDPC codes can be computed with high accuracy

A Probabilistic Algorithm for Computing the Weight Distribution of LDPC Codes

Masanori Hirotomo, Masami Mohri, Masakatu Morii

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are linear block codes defined by sparse parity-check matrices. The codes exhibit excellent performance under iterative decoding, and the weight distribution is used to analyze lower error probability of their decoding performance. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic method for computing the weight distribution of LDPC codes. The proposed method efficiently finds low-weight codewords in a given LDPC code by using Stern's algorithm, and stochastically computes the low part of the weight distribution from the frequency of the found codewords. It is based on a relation between the number of codewords with a given weight and the rate of generating the codewords in Stern's algorithm. In the numerical results for LDPC codes of length 504, 1008 and 4896, we could compute the weight distribution by the proposed method with greater accuracy than by conventional methods.

A reliability-based computation method for the weight distribution of LDPC codes using the probabilistic algorithm

Masanori Hirotomo, Masami Mohri, Masakatu Morii

In the analysis of maximum-likelihood decoding performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the weight distribution is an important factor. Some methods based on the error impluse method have presented in order to estimate the weight distribution of LDPC codes. However, these methods have no scheme which determine the number of codeword in LDPC codes. In this paper, we propose a reliability-based computation method for the weight distribution of LDPC codes using the probabilistic algorithm. Using the proposed method, we can determine the weight distribution of LDPC codes with small failure probability.

In the analysis of maximum-likelihood decoding performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the weight distribution is an important factor. We presented a probabilistic method for computing the weight distribution of LDPC codes, and showed results of computing the weight distribution of several LDPC codes. In this paper, we improve our previously presented method and propose a probabilistic computation method with reliability for the weight distribution of LDPC codes. Techniques for the decoding of low density parity check codes: efficient simulation, algorithm improvement and implementation

Babak Daneshrad, Enver Çavuş

After the introduction of iterative coding, Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes have received a lot of attention due to their remarkable near Shannon-limit performance and practical decoder implementation. However, when employing an LDPC code for various applications, multiple issues do arise at the simulation, algorithm and implementation levels. The first issue is the performance evaluation of the iterative LDPC decoder in the very low Bit Error Rate (BER) regions. So far, no analytical tool has been developed to evaluate the performance of LDPC codes. Unfortunately standard Monte Carlo (MC) simulations cannot be used for performance estimation in these low BER regions due to prohibitive execution times. The second issue is the efficiency of the decoding algorithm. Due to the presence of short cycles in the bipartite graph, sum-product decoding algorithms lead to considerable performance loss for short block-length LDPC codes and produce error floors for longer codes. In addition, the iterative processing and estimation of soft probabilistic values with these algorithms result in very high computational complexity, which in turn impedes the adoption of LDPC codes for power constrained systems. Another prime objective is to design a high throughput decoder architecture which is capable of supporting multiple rates and variable code lengths within minimal area. This work aims to address and provide solutions to the above problems. As a solution to the performance estimation problem of LDPC codes, a highly efficient and novel fast BER simulation technique is developed. At the algorithm level, a performance improvement and error floor avoidance method is introduced, and a computationally efficient algorithm is developed for the sum-product decoding of LDPC codes. And finally, at the architecture level, a high throughput multi-rate variable code length implementation is presented which, when implemented, efficiently minimizes device resources while alleviating the routing complexity of the decoder.

A linear model for the iterative decoding of random LDPC codes in the high SNR region

Kuntal Deka, A. Rajesh, Prabin Kumar Bora

This paper presents a linear model for the sum-product decoding of random low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, specifically in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. The sum-product algorithm is first approximated as the min-sum algorithm and then a linear model is estimated for the latter. To formulate the model, the dominant trapping sets of the particular code are found. We consider a criterion based on the channel log-likelihood-ratio values to estimate the linear model. The bit error rate performance predicted by the linear model is compared with that obtained through importance sampling. This confirms that the linear model can accurately predict the performance of LDPC codes in the high SNR region.

LDPC Codes Over the BEC: Bounds and Decoding Algorithms

Irina E. Bocharova, Boris D. Kudryashov, Vitaly Skachek +2 more

The performance of maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding on the binary erasure channel for finite-length low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes from two random ensembles is studied. A tightened union-type upper bound on the ML decoding error probability based on the precise coefficients of the average weight spectrum is presented. For LDPC codes from the Gallager ensemble and the Richardson-Urbanke ensemble, new upper bounds on the ML decoding performance based on computing the rank of submatrices of the code parity-check matrix are derived. A new lower bound on the ML decoding threshold followed from the latter error probability bound is obtained. An improved lower bound on the error probability for codes with a known estimate on the minimum distance is presented as well. A new low-complexity near-ML decoding algorithm for quasi-cyclic LDPC codes is proposed and simulated. Its performance is compared to the simulated belief propagation and ML decoding performance and simulated performance of the best known improved iterative decoding techniques, as well as, with the derived upper bounds on the ML decoding performance and with decoding thresholds obtained by the density evolution technique.
