Comment on “Superluminal solitons in a Λ-type atomic system with two-folded levels”

Abstract

We show that the analysis of the optical solitons in a resonant, lifetime-broadened Λ-type atomic system with two-folded lower levels, given recently by D. Han et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B24, 2244 (2007)], is incorrect. Although in the anomalous dispersion regime near resonance one may obtain a superluminal optical soliton, such a soliton suffers serious absorption and hence cannot propagate a significant distance. However, by choosing appropriate system parameters to work in the normal dispersion regime and hence inside the transparency windows of double dark resonance, an ultraslow optical soliton with very low light intensity can form and propagate stably for a fairly long distance.

Superluminal solitons in a Λ-type atomic system with two-folded levels

Dingan Han, Yaguang Zeng, Weicheng Chen +2 more

With one weak pulsed probe field, one strong pumping field, and one coupling field, superluminal optical solitons are formed in a lifetime-broadened Λ-type atomic medium with two-folded levels. The corresponding group velocity of the solitons can be larger than the vacuum light speed c; i.e., superluminal solitons can be presented.

Superluminal optical solitons in a four-level tripod atomic system

Dingan Han, Yaguang Zeng, Yanfeng Bai +1 more

With one weak probe field and two strong pumping fields, superluminal optical solitons are formed in a lifetime-broadened four-level tripod atomic medium. With proper parameters, both dark and bright solitons can occur in the highly resonant medium. The corresponding group velocity of the solitons can be superluminal. Meanwhile, the conditions for superluminal solitons occurrence are given.

Formation and propagation of matched and coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a four-level double- Λ system

L. Deng, M. G. Payne, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

We investigate the simultaneous formation and stable propagation of ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a lifetime broadened four-state atomic system under double-Lambda excitation with large one- and two-photon detunings. We show that detrimental probe field distortions due to strong dispersion effects under weak driving conditions can be well balanced by self- and cross-phase modulation effects, leading to a pair of temporal, group velocity, and amplitude matched ultraslow optical solitons of different frequencies.

Depletion of control field during the propagation of ultraslow optical solitons

Hui‐jun Li, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We study nonlinear excitations in a lifetime-broadened Λ-type three-level atomic system with a configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency. Different from previous works, we show that a significant depletion of the control field may occur during the formation and propagation of ultraslow optical solitons for the probe field. We demonstrate that ultraslow optical solitons predicted in previous works correspond to the limits of weak dispersion and weak nonlinearity, adiabatons correspond to the limits of stronger dispersion and stronger nonlinearity, and simultons correspond to the limits of strong dispersion and strong nonlinearity. Between these different limits the system also yields solitonlike nonlinear excitations with different levels of depletion of the control field. The results provided here are useful not only for a deep understanding of the interrelation between ultraslow optical solitons, adiabatons, and simultons, but also for potential applications in optical information processing and transmission.

Exhibition of subluminal solitons in a four-level atomic system with two-folded levels

Yaguang Zeng, Dingan Han

With one weak probe, one strong pumping and one control field, the group velocity dispersion can be balanced by the Kerr effects in a lifetime-broadened four-level atomic medium with two folded levels with proper parameters. This results from the subluminal optical solitons that are formed. Additionally, the conditions for which subluminal solitons occur are given.

Formation and propagation of coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a cold three-state double- Λ system

Guoxiang Huang, Kaijun Jiang, M. G. Payne +1 more

We investigate the simultaneous formation and propagation of coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a cold, lifetime-broadened three-state double-Lambda atomic system. Starting from the equations of motion of atomic response and two-mode probe-control electromagnetic fields, we derive coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of the envelopes of the probe fields in this four-wave mixing scheme by means of the standard method of multiple scales. We demonstrate that for weak probe fields and with suitable operation conditions, a pair of coupled optical solitons moving with remarkably slow propagating velocity can be established in such a highly resonant atomic medium. The key elements to such a shape preserving, well matched yet interacting soliton pair is the balance between dispersion effect and self- and cross-phase modulation effects of the system.
