Abstract

We report here for the first time the demonstration of self-pumped phase conjugation in photorefractive semiconductors using 1.32 μm light. Using an ac field technique to enhance the gain coefficient in InP:Fe and a single input pump beam, phase conjugate reflectivities of 11% were measured using an input beam intensity of less than 1 mW/mm2. These results open up many possibilities for using photorefractive semiconductors in applications with low-power infrared diode lasers.

Double-peak Phase Conjugate Reflectivity in InP:Fe at 1.32 µm

Dirk Jürgens, Azad Z. Siahmakoun, William A. Wood

We report on double-peak reflectivity temperature-tuned optical phase conjugation (OPC) in InP:Fe under dc fields. Degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) is realized in a new single-pump geometry that generates reflectivities up to 6.7% for pump intensity of 28 mW/cm2. The phase conjugate reflectivity exhibits strong temperature dependence but optimum reflectivity temperature deviates from that of the two-wave mixing (TWM) resonance. The thermal scans also exhibit different characteristics with the readout pump at a small phase-mismatch with respect to the writing beams.

Stationary Photorefractive Self-Pump Phase-Conjugation with Stimulated Backward Scattering in LiNbO 3 :Fe Crystals

Jingjun Xu, Xin-zheng Zhang, Qian Sun +4 more

Stationary photorefractive self-pumped phase-conjugation with one four-wave-mixing interaction region, stimulated by the photorefractive amplified backward scattering, is obtained in LiNbO 3 :Fe crystals, in which the strong backward scattered light is gotten by putting a scattering particle on the backface of the sample. Even though its reflectivities are not high (its temporal and stationary reflectivities are 10% and 3%, respectively), due to the low electrooptic coefficients of LiNbO 3 :Fe crystals, our experimental results prove that this mechanism is effective and simple comparing with the "cat" self-pumped phase-conjugator.

High-intensity Effects in Self-pumped Photorefractive Phase Conjugation Using Nanosecond Pulses

Michael J. Damzen, Nicolas P. E. Barry, Max Buttinger

This paper reports on self-pumped photorefractive phase conjugation using repetitively pulsed high intensity (MW cm−2) pulses of nanosecond duration. An intensity-dependent phase conjugate reflectivity is measured experimentally. In the corner self-pumped geometry the direction of beam fanning and corner self-pumping is observed to reverse above a critical intensity. Formation of a higher order spatial mode is reported for the external loop self-pumped geometry.

Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing (DFWM) in photorefractive materials has been shown to be an effective method to generate a phase conjugate beam and has been intensively studied both theoretically and experimentally [1-5].
