Bounds for Ising systems

Abstract

Ising systems are approximated by a generalized mean-field approximation in which only some of the interactions are replaced by their expectation values. If all the interactions are positive then it is shown that a self-consistent solution exists for the magnetization in this model and that it gives an upper bound for the true magnetization. Using this mean-field approximation, a generalization of the random-phase approximation is obtained. This is shown to give an upper bound for two-spin correlation functions.

Magnetization upper bound for quenched Ising models with random ferromagnetic interactions

Harold Falk

For the quenched spin-1/2 Ising model in a uniform magnetic field and having only nearest-neighbor interactions which are statistically independent non-negative (ferromagnetic) identically distributed random variables, an exact upper bound is obtained for the magnetization. The bound can be identified with the value computed from a generalized Bethe approximation and thereby provides an extension to random interactions of some recent work of Krinsky.

IMPROVED MEAN-FIELD TRANSFER MATRIX MODEL FOR HYPERCUBIC ISING SYSTEMS

Tuncer Kaya

A mean-field method for Ising systems is introduced generalizing the reduced transfer matrix method introduced by Kaya and Arık. The important assumption of the method is that the neighboring spins of a central spin can be replaced by the average magnetization 〈σ〉 of the system. The approximation is same as the previously introduced method. However, the derivative of average magnetization with respect to external magnetic field is defined without further approximation. In addition, the previously introduced model is extended to all hypercubic lattices. The critical coupling strength Kc for hypercubic lattices is evaluated self-consistently. Obviously, this assumption leads to some significant deviation from the exact treatment. However, the model introduced here is an improvement on most self-consistent mean-field-type approximations.

Pecularities of Bethe-like approximations and long-range-interaction Ising models

James L. Monroe

The mean-field approximation and the Bethe approximation are two of the most often used approximations when one wants to obtain approximations of the phase diagrams and the critical temperature of lattice spin systems. Both can and have often been generalized to produce what are known as cluster mean-field and Bethe approximations. Generally, three characteristics are associated with these approximations. First, they give upper bounds to the critical temperature; second, considering larger clusters will result in better approximations; and third, the Bethe approximation is better than the corresponding mean-field approximation. We show what we believe to be a rather surprising result that, for one-dimensional Ising models with algebraically decaying interactions falling off slowly enough, the Bethe cluster approximations violate all three of these characteristics.

Averaging over interaction fields and spin correlations

S. V. Semkin, Victor Smagin

Averaging over interaction fields and spin correlations in the Ising modelIn the theory of phase transitions in magnetic systems, there are a small number of exact results. One of them is the well-known Onsager solution for the Ising model on a square lattice. The problem of phase transitions in magnets is a special case of the problem of many bodies. There are many approaches and methods in this area, including the method of averaging over exchange fields. The application of the distribution function over interaction fields to the study of the properties of a system of many interacting particles has been used for a long time.In previous works of the authors, the method of averaging over exchange fields was applied to the analysis of the magnetic properties of pure and diluted magnets. In this paper, we formulate and prove the relations on which the method of averaging over exchange fields can be based on clusters of several spins. It turns out that based only on the possibility of representing thermodynamic means as means of the distribution function of the fields, some nontrivial exact relations can be obtained. The paper considers the Ising model on simple lattices with coordination numbers of three and four.Exact expressions are found that connect the average products of three spins with spontaneous magnetization in the system.Inequalities are obtained that limit the limiting value of the Curie temperature and the maximum value of spontaneous magnetization at a given temperature.

Effective Field Methods for Magnetic Systems

G. Kamieniarz, Raf Dekeyser, Grzegorz Musiał

The self-consistency conditions inherent in the mean-field approximation are extended to take into account some pair correlations.Ii is shown that this extension is systematically improvable and applicable to the spin systems with short-range interactions in the entire temperature region. With two correlations included and the renormalization-group ideas implemented, the critical properties of the Ising model are satisfactorily revealed. Moreover, the improved estimates of the thermodynamical quantities for the quantum linear XY model from the finite-size calculations are found down to very low temperatures.

Generalized mean field approximation for parallel dynamics of the Ising model

Hamed Mahmoudi, David Saad

The dynamics of the non-equilibrium Ising model with parallel updates is investigated using a generalized mean field approximation that incorporates multiple two-site correlations at any two time steps, which can be obtained recursively. The proposed method shows significant improvement in predicting local system properties compared to other mean field approximation techniques, particularly in systems with symmetric interactions. Results are also evaluated against those obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The method is also employed to obtain parameter values for the kinetic inverse Ising modeling problem, where couplings and local field values of a fully connected spin system are inferred from data.
