Abstract

Averaging over interaction fields and spin correlations in the Ising modelIn the theory of phase transitions in magnetic systems, there are a small number of exact results. One of them is the well-known Onsager solution for the Ising model on a square lattice. The problem of phase transitions in magnets is a special case of the problem of many bodies. There are many approaches and methods in this area, including the method of averaging over exchange fields. The application of the distribution function over interaction fields to the study of the properties of a system of many interacting particles has been used for a long time.In previous works of the authors, the method of averaging over exchange fields was applied to the analysis of the magnetic properties of pure and diluted magnets. In this paper, we formulate and prove the relations on which the method of averaging over exchange fields can be based on clusters of several spins. It turns out that based only on the possibility of representing thermodynamic means as means of the distribution function of the fields, some nontrivial exact relations can be obtained. The paper considers the Ising model on simple lattices with coordination numbers of three and four.Exact expressions are found that connect the average products of three spins with spontaneous magnetization in the system.Inequalities are obtained that limit the limiting value of the Curie temperature and the maximum value of spontaneous magnetization at a given temperature.

Approximate Accounting of Spin Correlations in the Ising Model

S. V. Semkin, Виктор Павлович Смагин

Abstract The expressions for average products of three neighboring spins in the Ising model have been found on lattices with coordination numbers 3 and 4 as functions of temperature and spontaneous magnetization. These expressions are used to compare the exact solution for the Ising model on a square lattice and the solutions found by approximate methods. A method of improving approximate methods is proposed for applying, in particular, to the Bethe approximation and to a change in the critical index of the temperature dependence of the spontaneous magnetization.

Approximation method for spin-½ Ising models

S. Gartenhaus

An approximation for calculating the thermodynamic properties of spin-\textonehalf{} Ising models is described. The method is based on the formulation of Kramers and Wannier for the square lattice, and involves expressing the free energy in terms of the limiting maximum eigenvalue of a matrix sequence which represents the contribution from a single spin of the lattice. The application of this formulation to various two- and three-dimensional lattices shows that many of these are characterized by an identically structured matrix sequence with exactly two nonvanishing elements in each row and column. To explore the potential of using this similarity and its simplicity for analyzing Ising models we consider the two-dimensional square lattice in an external field and approximate the doubly infinite lattice by a semi-infinite one consisting of $n (\ensuremath{\le}10)$ infinitely long rows. Calculations are carried out and compared with (1) Onsager's formula for the free energy, (2) the Onsanger-Yang formula for the spontaneous magnetization, and (3) values calculated from series. Except for the region around the critical point where the correlation length exceeds $n$ lattice spacings, substantial agreement---to better than 12 places of decimals in some cases---is obtained. As an additional measure of the potential of this method, a value for the critical exponent $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is computed by the extrapolation of the magnetization along the critical isotherm. The result is found to be in excellent agreement with the known value for $\ensuremath{\delta}$.

Correlation function of random-field Ising chains: is it Lorentzian or not?

J. M. Luck, Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen

The two-point connected correlation function, or wavevector-dependent susceptibility, of the ferromagnetic Ising chain in a random field is calculated exactly at any temperature, for a two-parameter family of diluted symmetric exponential distributions of the magnetic fields. Thermodynamic properties of this model have been derived in a previous work by the authors. Besides the correlation function itself, the solution provides exact results for the (usual) susceptibility, the correlation length and the Edwards-Anderson parameter. The low-temperature regime is examined in full detail: the authors obtain in closed form the limit value at zero temperature of various quantities, and the first correction to this limit, which behaves linearly with temperature. The correlation length is discontinuous at zero temperature. They also derive the scaling form of the correlation function for small p, where the dilution p is the probability for a spin to be subjected to a non-zero random field. Even in this limit, the correlation function is more complicated than the simple Lorentzian predicted, e.g., by mean-field theory.

Construction of an approximate solution for an Ising magnet in an external magnetic field

S. V. Semkin, Виктор Павлович Смагин, Elena G. Lavrushina

A method of approximate calculation of the magnetization of an Ising magnet located in an external magnetic field is proposed. This method is based on using an exact or approximate expression for the spontaneous magnetization of an Ising magnet on the same lattice. The method uses the ratio of effective fields for clusters of one and two lattice nodes. Using the proposed method for a magnet located in an external field, the dependence of magnetization on temperature and the magnitude of the external field is calculated. The proposed method is applied in the work to the solution in the mean field approximation, to the solution in the Beta approximation and to the exact solution on a square lattice; for all these solutions, critical indices characterizing the behavior of a magnet in an external field are calculated. Keywords: the Ising model, phase transitions, the influence of an external field.

Ising model with two-, three- and four-spin interactions

K.G. Chakraborty

The two-state Ising model with nearest-neighbour bilinear exchange constant J (2) , three-spin coupling constant J (3) and four-spin coupling constant J (4) is studied using the effective-field approximation. The temperature variation in spontaneous magnetization is studied for different coordination numbers z and for various values of the parameters alpha =J (3) /J (2) and alpha '=J (4) /J (2) . It is seen that, in the absence of three-spin coupling, there exists a critical value of alpha ' (say, alpha ' c ) above which the magnetization becomes double valued at and beyond the Curie temperature T c , forming a bulge near T c which indicates the occurrence of a first-order transition. The expressions for alpha ' c for z=3, 4, 6 are derived and it is found that alpha ' c increases as z increases. In the absence of four-spin coupling it is found that first-order transitions appear for alpha >or=0. The magnetization curves are also studied for the case when all the interactions are present. The results are discussed with reference to those obtained from the molecular-field approximation.

Upper bounds to the correlation functions of the random-bond Ising model and n-vector model with competing interactions

Tomoya Horiguchi, T. Morita

Studies a correlation function which is given by the canonical average of a product of one or more spin variables, for the random-bond Ising model, in which the exchange integrals are +J(J>O) and -J with probabilities p and 1-p, respectively. The authors show that an upper bound to the configurational average of the correlation functions, calculated in the thermodynamic limit in the zero external field limit, is the product of the same correlation function for the corresponding ferromagnetic Ising model at the temperature under consideration and the same quantity at the temperature T 1 which is determined by the condition T 1 =2J/ mod k B 1n(p/(1-p)) mod , where k B is the Boltzmann constant. The results are given for the random-bond Ising model of an arbitrary spin S, and also for the diluted random-bond Ising models of an arbitrary spin S, with the pair interaction and with general interaction, and for the diluted and undiluted random-bond n-vector model.
