Critical dynamics of the two-dimensional Potts model

Abstract

A dynamical theory for the Potts, model, recently introduced by the author, is applied to the two-dimensional, nearest-neighbour system. A decimation procedure is defined and, in the leading order of the approximations involved, the critical dynamical exponent is obtained for different numbers of Potts states.

Non-universality in the dynamics of the one-dimensional Potts model

P. O. Weir, J. Michael Kosterlitz, Steve Adachi

The authors discuss two recent papers on the dynamics of the one-dimensional Potts model which yield different values of the dynamical critical exponent. They show that in fact there are choices of the transition rates which yield arbitrarily large non-universal exponents.

Application of the Legendre transformation to the Potts model

L.G. Marland

The Legendre transformation, a modification of the decimation method used in the real space renormalisation group, is employed to study the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional S-state Potts model which exhibits a second-order phase transition for S<or=4. Thermal and magnetic critical exponents are calculated for the percolation (S to 1), Ising (S=2) and three- and four-state Potts models. Decimation estimates of the critical exponents and critical points for S=2, 3 and 4 are also presented.

Critical dynamics of the pure and diluted two-dimensional Ising model

Eduardo Lage

A decimation procedure is defined and applied to the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model. In the lowest approximation, a critical dynamical exponent z=2.22 is obtained. The bond-diluted problem is shown to lead to a breakdown of scaling at critical concentration, as argued recently.

Critical dynamics of the one-dimensional Potts model

Eduardo Lage

Uses the method developed by Achiam and Kosterlitz (1978) to obtain the dynamical critical exponent of the one-dimensional q-state Potts model. The author finds z=3 (q>2) and z=2 (q=2), thus confirming lower-bound estimates found previously.

A Monte Carlo study of the three-states antiferromagnetic Potts model in two dimensions

Francesco Fucito

Using Monte Carlo methods the author studies the two-dimensional three-stages Potts model with antiferromagnetic nearest neighbours and ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbours couplings on a square lattice. The author focuses on the case with only antiferromagnetic coupling; from the analysis of the data gathered, there is evidence that this system shows critical behaviour only at T=0.

Finite-size calculation of the dynamical critical exponent of the three-state Potts model

M. Aydin, M. Cemal Yalabık

The dynamical critical exponent z is calculated using the finite size scaling method for the two-dimensional three-state Potts model with nonconserved dynamics. The value of z is found to be between 2.1-2.3, with the most likely value being 2.2.
