Microscopic derivation of the stochastic process for the quantum Brownian oscillator

Abstract

The microscopic model of Ford, Kac, and Mazur for the interaction of an oscillator with a thermal reservoir is considered within the framework of stochastic quantization. The process executed by the Brownian particle is derived exactly and it is analyzed in detail. The phenomenological equations for the dynamics of the quantum oscillator in the equilibrium state, which we have previously derived, are recovered as the weak coupling limit of the exact theory.

Low-temperature properties in the stochastic quantisation of the Brownian oscillator

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Patrizia Ruggiero +1 more

The microscopic model of Ullersma (1966) for a harmonic oscillator in contact with a thermal reservoir is quantised in the framework of Nelson's stochastic mechanics. Eliminating the degrees of freedom of the thermal reservoir the stochastic process of the quantum Brownian oscillator is obtained as the sum of the thermal contribution and the quantum (zero-temperature) contribution. The properties of the quantum fluctuations are studied in detail and the equation of motion is derived, obtaining the first example of a non-Markovian Nelson process.

Stochastic Description of the Quantum Thermal Mixture

Patrizia Ruggiero, Marco Zannetti

In the framework of stochastic quantization the stochastic process is derived for the harmonic oscillator in equilibrium with a thermal bath. This allows one to treat the quantum and thermal fluctuations within the same scheme of stochastic differential equations. As an application of the theory the quantum-classical crossover is computed in the dynamical critical exponent of the Van Hove model.

Brownian motion of a quantum oscillator

Salvatore Carusotto

The theory of Brownian motion of a quantum oscillator is presented. The equation of motion for the density operator of the oscillator is obtained by a model Hamiltonian which characterizes the interaction between this oscillator and a reservoir. By applying iteration methods the equation of motion is solved and the time development of the density operator is obtained. The solution is then used to write the normally ordered generating functional for the field of the oscillator executing Brownian motion. This field appears to be the superposition of a thermal field in equilibrium with the reservoir, a chaotic field, and a field statistically similar to the one before the interaction. Next, it is shown that for large times the oscillator approaches equilibrium; moreover, it is shown that, if the reservoir is at zero temperature and initially the state of the oscillator is a coherent state, then it remains in a coherent state for later time. In order to obtain by differentiation two-time modal densities, a suitable two-time generating functional is introduced. This functional allows two-time averages to be computed from one-time averages before the interaction. Finally, some time-dependent statistical properties of the oscillator are studied.

Relaxation of the quantum Brownian oscillator

Rodolfo Figari, Patrizia Ruggiero, Marco Zannetti

The description of a quantum Brownian oscillator based on stochastic quantisation is applied to the non-equilibrium relaxation process. The quantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem is derived in a form which relates only the thermal component of the fluctuations to the response function. In the zero-temperature limit, it is shown that the transient is described by processes related to the solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation.

A classical Markov process in nonequilibrium quantum statistical mechanics

P. L. Torres

We obtain, from the exact microscopic, reversible, dynamics of an oscillator coupled to a heat bath, a classical, Markov stochastic process, for the energy of the oscillator. Also, the corresponding macroscopic phenomenological equation, describing an irreversible approach to equilibrium, is obtained.

Brownian Motion of a Quantum Oscillator

G. S. Agarwal

The theory of Brownian motion of a quantum oscillator is developed. The Brownian motion is described by a model Hamiltonian which is taken to be the one describing the interaction between this oscillator and a reservoir. Use is made of the master equation recently derived by the author, to obtain the equation of motion for the various reduced phase-space distribution functions that are obtained by mapping the density operator onto $c$-number functions. The equations of motion for the reduced phase-space distribution functions are found to be of the Fokker-Planck type. On transforming the Fokker-Planck equation to real variables, it is found to have the same form as the Fokker-Planck equation obtained by Wang and Uhlenbeck to describe the Brownian motion of a classical oscillator. The Fokker-Planck equation is solved for the conditional probability (Green's function) which is found to be in the form of a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution. This solution is then used to obtain various time-dependent quantum statistical properties of the oscillator. Next, the entropy for a quantum oscillator undergoing Brownian motion is calculated and we show that this system approaches equilibrium as $t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. Finally we show that in the weak-coupling limit the Fokker-Planck equation reduces to the one obtained by making the usual rotating-wave approximation.
