Abstract

The autoionization distribution of the triply excited double Rydberg states (TEDRS) 5 d 5/2 N Lnl ( N ⩽ 22; n ⩽ 50; L, l < 4) of La has been investigated by using five-laser resonance excitation in combination with a method of sequential ionization by a pulsed electric field and a constant electric field. The experimental results exhibit that the La atoms in TEDRS predominantly single-autoionize to the ionic Rydberg states located in a few Rydberg manifolds. Furthermore, a difference of autoionization mechanisms between TEDRS above and those below the double ionization threshold is found.

Atomic triply excited double Rydberg states of lanthanum investigated by selective laser excitation

Weidong Sun, Panpan Xue, Xiu-Ping Xie +4 more

The atomic triply excited double Rydberg states (TEDRS) of La have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. It is revealed that in such an asymmetric four-body system where three electrons have very different orbital energies, the electronic correlations can be understood by means of decomposing into different dielectronic correlations that play different roles time-dependently. The correlations depend strongly on the relative excited orbital energies of three valence electrons. Our theoretical approach based on a semiclassical model is able to interpret the two observed patterns of ${\mathrm{La}}^{+}$ ion distributions among high Rydberg states resulted from the decay of TEDRS.

Autoionizing Process of the Double Rydberg State

Chengbin Xu, Xiang-Yuan Xu, Wen Tao Huang +4 more

Using five-laser resonance excitation and double time-of-flight spectroscopy, the double Rydberg states N Lnl ( N ⩽ 66; n ⩽ 85; L , l < 4) of Ca have been obtained. The distribution of Ca + Rydberg states, which is from the autoionization of the double Rydberg state has been measured. A novel result has been observed.

Observation of strong electronic correlation for highly excited double Rydberg states of ytterbium

Wenbo Huang, Xiang-Yuan Xu, C. B. Xu +3 more

Using five-laser resonance excitation in combination with a method of sequential ionization by a pulsed and a constant electric field, we have observed the nearly pure spectra (the ion resonance background was greatly suppressed) for the highly excited double Rydberg states NLn'l (N\ensuremath{\gtrsim}40, N/n'\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5 and L,l4) of ytterbium in which the mutual penetration of the two excited wave functions is remarkable. Analysis of the spectra (relative cross section for different L states) has revealed the importance of the ``hybridization'' in the excited electron orbits which arises from the correlation of the two electrons in such highly excited states.

Novel Experimental Method in the Study of Double Rydberg States by Laser Resonance Excitation

XU Xiangyua

We describe a novel experimental method by introducing sequential ionization with a pulsed and a strong constant electric field in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. This method is applied to study laser-excited double Rydberg states of neutral ytterbium atom, with the ionic resonance background in the spectrum of the double Rydberg states of Yb being greatly suppressed.

Electric Field Ionization of High Rydberg States of Ar with Sequences of Identical Pulses

Frédéric Merkt, R. J. Rednall, Stuart R. Mackenzie +1 more

Novel field-ionization behavior of very high Rydberg states of Ar ( $n\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}50--250$) is observed using sequential pulsed electric fields. Fast autoionization acts as a filter against adiabatic field ionization near the ${}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ threshold, whereas both diabatic and adiabatic field ionization occur near the ${}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ threshold. Sequences of up to 9 equivalent pulses yield recurrent field ionization signals near the ${}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ threshold, provided that the field returns close to zero between pulses, demonstrating a statistical redistribution of the Rydberg population amongst all states of a given Stark manifold near zero field.

Investigation of the Stark effect in krypton autoionizing Rydberg series with the use of two-step laser excitation

Christian Delsart, Jean-Claude Keller

The first detailed observation of the perturbations by an electric field of the Rydberg autoionizing resonances of a rare-gas atom is reported. The Stark spectroscopy of autoionizing Rydberg states converging to the second ionization limit $4{p}^{5}^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}^{o}$ in Kr I is performed in an atomic beam with the use of a two-step laser excitation from the $4{p}^{5}5s{[\frac{3}{2}]}_{2}^{0}$ metastable state. In addition to the verification of the ${({n}^{*})}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ dependence of the zero-field width of two autoionizing series and of the linear dependence of the Stark-manifold splittings with the electric field, we have observed an ${(n)}^{0.7}$ law for the dependence of the Stark-manifold splitting along the series, an important narrowing and dissymmetrization of the $n{d}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ resonances, and a nonlinear-field behavior of Stark-manifold components in the vicinity of the first anticrossing. Discussions are carried out with the use of the recent work on Rydberg-Stark spectroscopy and on autoionizing states in two-electron atoms.
