Abstract

This talk will present experimental results on the observation of strong single-photon non-linearities in a quantum-dot cavity device. We observe strong photon blockade for resonantly scattered photons and demonstrate ultrafast all-optical switching by single photons.

Much in physics is explained through an understanding of harmonic oscillation, but nonlinearity makes physics more exciting and greatly contributes for its many applications. Optical nonlinearities at the single-photon level are key ingredients for future photonic quantum technologies. Here we report unprecedented strong single-photon nonlinearities and single-photon switching on ultrafast timescales in epitaxial quantum dots strongly coupled to microcavities.

A photonic crystal cavity with a strongly coupled quantum dot is coherently driven using short laser pulses. Depending on the driving frequency, photon blockade or photon induced tunneling is observed. These nonlinear phenomena at single photon level are used for on-chip generation of nonclassical light.

Optical nonlinearity with few-photon pulses using a quantum dot-pillar cavity device

A single two-level system constitutes an extremely non-linear optical medium, where the interaction with a first single photon modifies the transmission probability for a second photon. The main difficulty to implement a single photon switch using this property is to ensure that a gate single photon will interact with the quantum emitter with a near-unity probability. In the solid state, all-optical switching has been demonstrated using photonic crystals or microdisks coupled to quantum dots, but these systems were not well externally matched: hundreds of incident photons were thus required to trigger the optical nonlinearity.

By deterministically controlling the spontaneous emission of a single semiconductor quantum dot in a microcavity, we obtain ultrabright solid-state sources of indistinguishable single photons and demonstrate optical non-linearities at the few photon scale.
