Momentum distributions for the quantum δ -kicked rotor with decoherence

Abstract

We report on the momentum distribution line shapes for the quantum delta-kicked rotor in the presence of environment induced decoherence. Experimental and numerical results are presented. In the experiment ultracold cesium atoms are subjected to a pulsed standing wave of near resonant light. Spontaneous scattering of photons destroys dynamical localization. For the scattering rates used in our experiment the momentum distribution shapes remain essentially exponential.

Quantum Delta-Kicked Rotor: Experimental Observation of Decoherence

We report on the experimental observation of environment induced decoherence in the quantum delta-kicked rotor. Ultracold cesium atoms are subjected to a pulsed standing wave of near resonant light. Spontaneous scattering of photons destroys dynamical localization thereby giving rise to a quantum diffusion, which approaches the classical diffusion with an increasing degree of decoherence. This tendency is enhanced by a stronger stochasticity in the underlying classical system. A comparison with theoretical predictions is presented.

Experimental observation of dynamical localization and decoherence in the atomic -kicked rotor

H. Ammann, R. Gray, Nelson L Christensen +1 more

We experimentally investigate decoherence by spontaneous emission in the quantum delta kicked rotor. Caesium atoms in a magneto-optic trap are initially cooled, and then subjected to a pulsed standing wave of near resonant light. As the detuning from the atomic transition is varied, we observe a change in the momentum diffusion after the quantum break time.

Momentum distributions for the quantum δ-kicked rotor with decoherence

We discuss the theoretical description and numerical simulation of the effect of noise and environmental coupling on the momentum distribution of the quantum δ-kicked rotor in recent atom optics experiments. We investigate the transition between exponentially localized and more nearly Gaussian momentum distributions and compare our simulations with existing experimental results.

Atom Optics Realization of the Quantum δ -Kicked Rotor

F. L. Moore, J. C. Robinson, C. F. Bharucha +2 more

We report the first direct experimental realization of the quantum $\ensuremath{\delta}$-kicked rotor. Our system consists of a dilute sample of ultracold sodium atoms in a periodic standing wave of near-resonant light that is pulsed on periodically in time to approximate a series of delta functions. Momentum spread of the atoms increases diffusively with every pulse until the "quantum break time" after which exponentially localized distributions are observed. Quantum resonances are found for specific values of the pulse period.

Quantum Enhancement of Momentum Diffusion in the Delta-Kicked Rotor

M. B. d’Arcy, R. M. Godun, Markus K Oberthaler +2 more

We present detailed observations of the quantum delta-kicked rotor in the vicinity of a quantum resonance. Our experiment consists of an ensemble of cold cesium atoms subject to a pulsed off-resonant standing wave of light. We measure the mean energy and show clearly that at the quantum resonance it is a local maximum. We also examine the effect of noise on the system and find that the greatest sensitivity to this occurs at the resonances. This makes these regions ideal for examining quantum-classical correspondence. A picture based on diffraction is developed which allows the experiments to be readily understood.

Diffusion resonances in action space for an atom optics kicked rotor with decoherence

Andrew J. Daley, A. S. Parkins, R. Leonhardt +1 more

We numerically investigate momentum diffusion rates for the pulse kicked rotor across the quantum to classical transition as the dynamics are made more macroscopic by increasing the total system action. For initial and late time rates we observe an enhanced diffusion peak which shifts and scales with changing kick strength, and we also observe distinctive peaks around quantum resonances. Our investigations take place in the context of a system of ultracold atoms which is coupled to its environment via spontaneous emission decoherence, and the effects should be realizable in ongoing experiments.
