Exact results for the dynamics of the classical nearest-neighbour Heisenberg chain at low temperatures

Abstract

Rigorous results are presented for the dynamics of the nearest-neighbour Heisenberg chain, for fixed but arbitrary wavevector and frequency, to lowest non-trivial order in the temperature. The authors obtain the two-spin correlation function, in the antiferromagnet for all wavevectors, and in the ferromagnet for wavelengths shorter than a coherence length. The energy correlation function at T=0 is obtained exactly, and is identical in the two systems. They find a violation of dynamical scaling in the form of the spectral function in the antiferromagnet for a range of wavevectors. An extension of the perturbative results for the ferromagnet to treat wavelengths longer than a coherence length shows that the diffusion coefficient vanishes logarithmically, in contrast to the scaling prediction that it is constant. An approximate value for the coefficient of the logarithmic term is obtained which agrees well with the results of simulations.

Temperature dependence of spin correlation functions in the isotropic Heisenberg model

Kapil Kumar Meena

The thermal evolution of equal-time spin correlations in the antiferromagnetic isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain is examined by full exact diagonalization of a ten-site periodic cluster. The calculation retains the complete spectrum and evaluates canonical ensemble averages without decoupling approximations. Correlations through the maximum independent separation are reported over 0.10 ≤ kBT/J ≤ 5. The low-temperature state displays the expected alternating antiferromagnetic pattern and appreciable correlations across the finite ring. Heating suppresses the magnitude of every nonlocal correlator, with longer-range terms disappearing first. The nearest-neighbour correlation approaches the high-temperature limit continuously, while an effective finite-cluster correlation length falls rapidly around kBT/J of order unity. Low- and high-temperature consistency checks, SU (2) symmetry, and comparison with Bethe-ansatz expectations are used to validate the computation. The results provide a compact reproducible reference for interpreting thermal loss of short-range order, while clearly separating finite-size numerical evidence from thermodynamic-limit conclusions.

Exact Results for the Dynamics of the Classical Nearest-Neighbor Heisenberg Chain Near T=0

George Reiter, Alf Sjölander

We present rigorous perturbation results for the dynamics of the classical nearest-neighbor Heisenberg chain, using the temperature as a small parameter. The lifetime and the frequency shift of the spin waves are determined. For the antiferromagnet we find that there is a region of wave vectors close to the zone boundary where the dynamical scaling fails and we argue that this is a general property of the Heisenberg chain close to $T=0$.

Spin dynamics of the frustrated integer spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain

G. M. Rocha-Filho, M. E. Gouvêa, Antonio S. T. Pires

We present low-temperature static and dynamic properties of the quantum one-dimensional isotropic integer spin Heisenberg magnet with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour (nn) and next-nearest-neighbour (nnn) interactions. The modified spin-wave theory is used to provide quantities such as the spin-wave dispersion relation, the ground-state energy, the gap and its dependence with temperature, and the asymptotic behaviour of the spin–spin correlation function. The ground state energy and the singlet–triplet energy gap are obtained for several values of j, defined as the ratio of the nnn interaction constant to the nn one. Our results show that the ground-state and the gap energies increase with j, in accordance with numerical results available in the literature. The calculation of the dynamic correlation function is performed using the projection operator formalism: the procedure includes up to two-magnon processes. We show that, depending on the values of the frustration parameter j, the wavevector and the temperature, a double-peak structure for the dynamical correlation function can develop.

Static and dynamic properties of a dimerized quantum-spin chain

Oliver Fritz, Stephen William Lovesey, Greg I Watson

Various static spin-correlation functions and the weights of the spin excitations, or collective normal modes, in the van Hove response function, observed in neutron scattering experiments, are calculated as a function of temperature for a model quantum-spin chain. The spins interact through an isotropic Heisenberg exchange that extends to nearest-neighbour spins. In our model, spins of magnitude 1/2 form a dimerized chain with alternating exchange interactions. We explore the static and dynamic properties for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. Results for the various properties are shown to be exact in the limit of a high temperature, and we argue that the results are very good at low temperatures. Unlike the case for linear spin-wave theory, the results are also exact in the limit of strong dimerization, i.e. non-interacting coupled pairs of spins.

Breakdown of hydrodynamics in the classical 1D Heisenberg model

O. F. de Alcantara Bonfim, George Reiter

Extensive spin-dynamics simulations have been performed to study the dynamical behavior of the classical Heisenberg chain at infinite temperatures and long wavelengths. We find that the energy and spin show distinctly different dynamics in the isotropic system. The energy correlation function follows the classical diffusion theory prediction, namely, it decays exponentially with ${\mathit{q}}^{2}$t. In contrast, the spin correlation function is found to decay exponentially as ${\mathit{q}}^{2.12}$t lnt, implying a logarithmically divergent diffusion constant and the failure of the usual hydrodynamic assumptions.

Computer studies of spin and energy transport in one-dimensional Heisenberg magnets

N.A. Lurie, David L. Huber, Martin Blume

We have studied the dynamics of the classical Heisenberg chain at finite and infinite temperatures by computer simulation of an array of 4000 spins. The evaluation of the spin-spin and energy-energy wave-vector- and time-dependent correlation functions out to time $10{J}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ made it possible to determine the spin and energy diffusion constants. At infinite temperature we find ${D}_{S}=(1.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10)JS{a}^{2}$ and ${D}_{E}=(3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)JS{a}^{2}$. Values of ${D}_{S}$ have also been determined, with less precision, for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions at temperatures $\frac{{k}_{B}T}{|J|}=1.0 \mathrm{and} 0.5$. Our results are compared with various theoretical estimates. In addition, we calculate the time-dependent spin and energy self-correlation functions.
