The spin-current blockade in Luttinger liquid

Abstract

We investigate the spin-charge separation in the Luttinger liquid with a defective bond of controllable spin-dependent hopping by using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method. The model is the non-half-filled Hubbard chain with this special bond, which is found to block the relevant spin current with little influence on charge current. We have considered the pure spin and charge currents induced by the voltage biases that are applied to the ideal leads attached at the ends of this Hubbard chain. The phenomenon is so robust that one may utilize it to observe the spin-charge separation directly.

Controllable spin-current blockade in a Hubbard chain

Yao Yao, Hui Chao Zhao, Joel E. Moore +1 more

We investigate the spin or charge transport in a one-dimensional strongly correlated system by using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group method. The model we consider is a non-half-filled Hubbard chain with a bond of controllable spin-dependent electron hoppings, which is found to cause a blockade of spin current with little influence on charge current. We have considered (1) the spread of a wave packet of both spin and charge and (2) the spin and charge currents induced by a spin-dependent voltage bias. It is found that the spin-charge separation plays a crucial role in the spin-current blockade, which may be utilized to observe the spin-charge separation directly.

Separation of spin and charge in cold Fermi gases

Corinna Kollath

One of the key features of one-dimensional systems is the phenomenon of spin–charge separation. We show this separation of spin and charge in real time in the 1D Hubbard model by the application of the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method. It is found for single particle excitations and density wave packets far beyond the low-energy Luttinger liquid theory. An experimental set-up is proposed on how to observe the spin–charge separation with ultracold Fermi gases in a harmonic trap using the presence of the Mott-insulator region. Quantitative estimates for experimental parameters are given.

Spin-Charge Separation in Cold Fermi Gases: A Real Time Analysis

Corinna Kollath, Ulrich Schollwöck, W. Zwerger

Using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method for the 1D Hubbard model, the splitting of local perturbations into separate wave packets carrying charge and spin is observed in real time. We show the robustness of this separation beyond the low-energy Luttinger liquid theory by studying the time evolution of single particle excitations and density wave packets. A striking signature of spin-charge separation is found in 1D cold Fermi gases in a harmonic trap at the boundary between liquid and Mott-insulating phases. We give quantitative estimates for an experimental observation of spin-charge separation in an array of atomic wires.

The Doped Two-Chain Hubbard Model

R. M Noack, S. R White, Douglas J. Scalapino

The properties of the two-chain Hubbard model doped away from half-filling are investigated with the density matrix renormalization group. The charge gap is found to vanish, but a finite spin gap phase exists over a range of interchain hopping strength t ⊥ . In this phase, there are modified d x 2 - y 2 pairing correlations which exhibit a power law decay while both the 2 k F spin and charge correlations are short range. Above a critical value of t ⊥ , the system behaves as a Luttinger liquid.

Nonequilibrium Current in the One Dimensional Hubbard Model at Half-Filling

Shunsuke Kirino, Kazuo Ueda

Nonlinear transport in the one dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling under a finite bias voltage is investigated by the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. For repulsive on-site interaction, dielectric breakdown of the Mott insulating ground state to a current-carrying nonequilibrium steady state is clearly observed when the voltage exceeds the charge gap. It is found that by increasing the voltage further the current-voltage characteristics are scaled only by the charge gap and the scaling curve exhibits almost linear dependence on the voltage whose slope is suppressed by the electron correlation. In the case of attractive interaction the linear conductance is the perfect one $2e^2/h$ which agrees with the prediction by the Luttinger liquid theory.

Luttinger liquid phase in the Aubry-André Hubbard chain

Runze Chi, Josephine J. Yu, Chaitanya Murthy +1 more

We study the interplay between an on-site Hubbard repulsion and quasiperiodic potential in one-dimensional fermion chains using the density matrix renormalization group. We find that, at half filling, the quasiperiodic potential can destroy the Mott gap, leading to a metallic Luttinger liquid phase between the gapped Mott insulator at strong repulsion and the localized gapless Aubry-Andr\'e insulator at strong quasiperiodic potential. Away from half filling, the metallic phase of the interacting model persists to larger critical strengths of the potential than in the noninteracting case, suggesting interaction-stabilized delocalization at finite doping. We characterize the Luttinger liquid through its charge and spin correlations, structure factors, and entanglement entropy.
