Abstract

We study the interplay between an on-site Hubbard repulsion and quasiperiodic potential in one-dimensional fermion chains using the density matrix renormalization group. We find that, at half filling, the quasiperiodic potential can destroy the Mott gap, leading to a metallic Luttinger liquid phase between the gapped Mott insulator at strong repulsion and the localized gapless Aubry-Andr\'e insulator at strong quasiperiodic potential. Away from half filling, the metallic phase of the interacting model persists to larger critical strengths of the potential than in the noninteracting case, suggesting interaction-stabilized delocalization at finite doping. We characterize the Luttinger liquid through its charge and spin correlations, structure factors, and entanglement entropy.

Spinless fermion ladders at half filling

P. Donohue, Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Thierry Giamarchi +1 more

We study a half-filled ladder of spinless fermions. We show that contrary to a single chain, the ladder becomes a Mott insulator for arbitrarily small repulsive interactions. We obtain the full phase diagram and physical quantities such as the charge gap. We show that there is only a single insulating phase for repulsive interactions, regardless of the strength of the interchain hopping and single chain Mott gap. There is thus no confinement-deconfinement transition in this system but a simple crossover. Using bosonization with the renormalization group we show that upon doping the system becomes a Luttinger liquid with a universal parameter $K=1/2$ different from the one of the single chain $(K=1/4).$

The Doped Two-Chain Hubbard Model

R. M Noack, S. R White, Douglas J. Scalapino

The properties of the two-chain Hubbard model doped away from half-filling are investigated with the density matrix renormalization group. The charge gap is found to vanish, but a finite spin gap phase exists over a range of interchain hopping strength t ⊥ . In this phase, there are modified d x 2 - y 2 pairing correlations which exhibit a power law decay while both the 2 k F spin and charge correlations are short range. Above a critical value of t ⊥ , the system behaves as a Luttinger liquid.

Metallicity in the half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model

Holger Fehske, Georg Hager, Eric Jeckelmann

We re-examine the Peierls insulator to Mott insulator transition scenario in the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model where, at half-filling, electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete for establishing charge- and spin-density-wave states, respectively. By means of large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations we determine the spin, single-particle and two-particle excitation gaps and prove —in the course of a careful finite-size scaling analysis— recent claims for an intervening metallic phase in the weak-coupling regime. We show that for large phonon frequencies the metallic region is even more extended than previously expected, and subdivided into ordinary Luttinger-liquid and bipolaronic-liquid phases.

Gapped spin-liquid states in a one-dimensional Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction

Jianhui Dai, Xiaoyong Feng, Tao Xiang +1 more

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction analytically and numerically. The bosonization and transfer-matrix renormalization group methods are used in the corresponding coupling regimes. At half-filling, the system is a Mott insulator with a finite spin excitation gap if the on-site Coulomb repulsion is fairly smaller than the antiferromagnetic exchange $J$. This Mott insulator is characterized by the bond-charge-density-wave order or spontaneously dimerization. In the weak-coupling regime where the spin-charge separation holds approximately, the critical point separating the gapless and gapped spin liquid phases is ${U}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}J∕2$. However, as $J$ increases, the spin-charge couplings become important and the critical point ${U}_{c}$ is significantly suppressed and eventually tends to zero as $J\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. Away from half-filling, the charge gap completely collapses but the spin gap persists.

Violation of Luttinger's theorem in one-dimensional interacting fermions

Meng Gao, Yin Zhong

Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we systematically investigate the evolution of the Luttinger integral in the one-dimensional generalized $t$-$V$ model as a function of filling and interaction strength, and identify three representative phases. In the weak-coupling regime, the zero-frequency Green's function exhibits a branch-cut structure at the Fermi momentum, and the Luttinger integral accurately reflects the particle density, indicating that the Luttinger theorem holds. As the interaction increases, the spectral weight near the Fermi momentum is gradually suppressed. Interestingly, in the strong coupling regime near half-filling, this singularity is progressively destroyed, accompanied by the emergence of momentum-space zeros in the real part of the Green's function, leading to a novel non-Fermi liquid metallic phase beyond the classic Luttinger liquid paradigm, where the Luttinger surface is no longer defined by a single singularity. While finite spectral weight remains at the original Fermi momentum, the singularity gradually diminishes. Meanwhile, zeros with negligible spectral weight appear away from this momentum, significantly affecting the integral. At exact half-filling, a single-particle gap opens, and the Green's function becomes nearly vanishing across the entire momentum space, indicating the complete suppression of low-energy electronic states consistent with the nature of an insulating charge-density-wave phase. These results suggest that the breakdown of the Luttinger theorem is not triggered by a single mechanism, but rather results from the interplay between interaction-driven evolution of excitation modes and the breaking of particle-hole symmetry, ultimately leading to a continuous reconstruction of the generalized Fermi surface from topologically protected to correlation-driven.

The Mott-Anderson transition in the disordered one-dimensional Hubbard model

Ramesh V. Pai, Alexander Punnoose, Rudolf A. Römer

We use the density matrix renormalization group to study the quantum transitions that occur in the half-filled one-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model with onsite potential disorder. We find a transition from the gapped Mott phase with algebraic spin correlations to a gapless spin-disordered phase beyond a critical strength of the disorder $Δ_c \approx U/2$. Both the transitions in the charge and spin sectors are shown to be coincident. We also establish the finite-size corrections to the charge gap and the spin-spin correlation length in the presence of disorder and using a finite-size-scaling analysis we obtain the zero temperature phase diagram of the various quantum phase transitions that occur in the disorder-interaction plane.
