Abstract

Resonance electron-positive ion scattering in the presence of a strong electromagnetic field at an initial energy of colliding particles close to the energy of their autoionizing state and a field frequency resonant to the frequency of the transition between autoionizing and Rydberg states of the system was investigated. The resulting cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering (accompanied by forced absorption of a photon) exhibit a pronounced resonance structure, strongly dependent on the electromagnetic field parameters and those of the electron-ion system under consideration.

Resonance electron-atom scattering in a strong electromagnetic field

V A Pazdzersky, V I Usachenko, Alexander B Voitkiv

Cross sections for resonance (elastic and inelastic) scattering of an electron by the atomic system in a strong electromagnetic (EM) field of frequency omega have been determined for the initial electron-atom system energy E approximately= in a+ omega where in a is the energy of the autoionising state (AIS). The case of scattering when apart from the AIS the spectrum of a system comprises a bound discrete state that is mixed with the AIS by the EM field has been considered as well.

Electron-atom scattering in a resonant laser field

K. Unnikrishnan

Dressed states of an atom in a classical laser field of frequency close to an atomic transition frequency are obtained, which are a considerable improvement over the usual two-level rotating-wave approximation. These wave functions are used in a calculation of the cross section for elastic electron-atom scattering in a laser field. Numerical calculations for electron-hydrogen scattering demonstrate that scattering involving absorption or emission of photons can be strongly influenced by coupling to the nonresonant states, regardless of the field strength. Inclusion of the counter-rotating terms in the calculation is shown to be essential for extending the applicability of the theory to scattering in nonresonant fields, where a first-order perturbation-theoretic treatment of the atom-field interaction would be expected to be quite justified.

Investigation of Rydberg states by analyzing resonant laser-assisted elastic electron-atom scattering

Svetlana Vučić

We show that both the laser-assisted and field-free cross sections for electron scattering by an excited state of an atom, or molecule, can be found by analyzing the resonant laser-assisted scattering process, provided that the initial low-lying state is brought into resonance with the excited state. The method relies on the adiabatic evolution of the laser field throughout the resonance, and its subsequent adiabatic switchoff out of the resonant region.

Effects of ultra-low-energy resonances in the elastic scattering of electrons by alkali-metal atoms in collisions of high-Rydberg atoms with alkali-metal atoms

Michio Matsuzawa, Naoto Koyama

It is theoretically predicted that an isolated narrow resonance in the elastic scattering of electrons by alkali-metal atoms (M) gives rise to a single maximum in the n dependence of the total cross sections of high-Rydberg atoms A** in the highest allowed angular momentum states with M if the resonance width is roughly equal to or larger than the width of a single peak of the electron momentum distribution of the Rydberg states with highest angular momentum, i.e. l=n-1. This can be used to detect the narrow resonance theoretically predicted in e-M elastic scattering at ultra-low energies.

Electron scattering from atoms in the presence of a laser field. IV

Marvin H. Mittleman

A recent experiment in which an electron scattering off an atom at a resonance energy is excited to a higher resonance energy by absorption of a laser photon is analyzed. There is more than one mechanism for the reaction, but the cross section, as a function of the laser frequency, is shown to have only one peak for each pair of electron-atom resonance states which can be connected by absorption of a photon. The width of the peak is the width of the upper resonance state.

Resonant ionization in slow-atom-Rydberg-atom collisions

R.K. Janev, A. A. Mihajlov

The process of ionization in slow-atom-Rydberg-atom collisions is investigated. A resonant energy exchange mechanism is considered responsible for the electron transition into the continuum. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical systems are considered. The ionization probabilities and cross sections for a number of Rydberg states in the colliding systems ${\mathrm{H}}^{*}(n)+\mathrm{H}$, ${\mathrm{Li}}^{*}(n)+\mathrm{Li}$, ${\mathrm{H}}^{*}(n)+\mathrm{Li}$ are calculated.
