Field distributions and tricritical points in a random-field Ising model: Mean-field renormalization-group approach

A.S. de Arruda, W. Figueiredo, Rafael M. Sebastianes +1 more

The form of the field distribution, in a random-field Ising model, is known to play an important role in determining the order of the phase transition and the existence of a tricritical point. We have studied a random-field Ising model with a trimodal distribution (sum of three \ensuremath{\delta} functions), which simulates a Gaussian distribution for a certain range of its parameters, within the mean-field renormalization-group scheme. We have considered clusters of one, two, and four spins, and the recursion relations for the determination of the fixed points are numerically analyzed. Using this analysis we have constructed the phase diagram of the system in the space of coupling (K), field (h), and zero-field probability (p). It is shown that the line of tricritical points ends for values of p near (2/3, very different from that obtained in the usual mean-field approximation. Mean-field renormalization-group (p\ensuremath{\simeq}(2/3) results are found to be consistent with the equivalence of the trimodal and Gaussian (absence of tricritical points) distributions until the fourth-order moments for p=(2/3.

Teaching spontaneous magnetization by using a probability distribution

J. Güémez, Santiago Velasco, Juan A. White

The equilibrium magnetization distribution for an Ising-spin model in the mean-field approximation is used to present a simple study of the ferromagnetic phase transition in the absence of external magnetic field (spontaneous magnetization). For temperatures below a critical one (the Curie Temperature) this distribution exhibits two peaks, showing that two states of magnetization are possible. At the Curie temperature the distribution presents a plateau, showing large fluctuations in the magnetization. A scaling-like analysis of the distribution shows that the Curie point can be characterized as an unstable fixed point of a recursion relation.

Tricritical point of the J1−J2 Ising model on a hyperbolic lattice

Roman Krčmár, Takatsugu Iharagi, Andrej Gendiar +1 more

The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition of the two-dimensional frustrated Ising model on a hyperbolic lattice is investigated by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. The model contains a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and a competing antiferromagnetic interaction J2 . A mean-field-like second-order phase transition is observed when the ratio kappa=J_{2}J_{1} is less than 0.203. In the region 0.203<kappa<14 , the spontaneous magnetization is discontinuous at the transition temperature. Such tricritical behavior suggests that the phase transitions on hyperbolic lattices need not always be mean-field-like.
