Abstract

The form of the field distribution, in a random-field Ising model, is known to play an important role in determining the order of the phase transition and the existence of a tricritical point. We have studied a random-field Ising model with a trimodal distribution (sum of three \ensuremath{\delta} functions), which simulates a Gaussian distribution for a certain range of its parameters, within the mean-field renormalization-group scheme. We have considered clusters of one, two, and four spins, and the recursion relations for the determination of the fixed points are numerically analyzed. Using this analysis we have constructed the phase diagram of the system in the space of coupling (K), field (h), and zero-field probability (p). It is shown that the line of tricritical points ends for values of p near (2/3, very different from that obtained in the usual mean-field approximation. Mean-field renormalization-group (p\ensuremath{\simeq}(2/3) results are found to be consistent with the equivalence of the trimodal and Gaussian (absence of tricritical points) distributions until the fourth-order moments for p=(2/3.

Phase diagram of a trimodal random-field spin-SIsing model

Rafael M. Sebastianes, W. Figueiredo

A spin-S Ising model in a random field, with a trimodal distribution (sum of three \ensuremath{\delta} functions), is studied in the mean-field approximation. Through a detailed analysis of the Landau coefficients, we can determine the phase diagram of this model for the relevant values of the parameters. We find a line of fourth-order points (end of a line of tricritical points) as a function of S. We also discuss the classical-limit results.

Phase Diagram of the Semi-Infinite Ising Model in a Random Field

A.S. de Arruda, W. Figueiredo

We determine the phase diagram of the semi-infinite Ising model in a cubic lattice with a trimodal distribution of random fields on the surface. We use the mean-field renormalization group with the smallest possible clusters to show that a very small dilution of the random field at surface is sufficient to destroy the tricritical behavior.

Phase diagram of the transverse Ising model in a random field

F. S. Milman, Paulo R. Hauser, W. Figueiredo

We determine the phase diagram of the transverse Ising model with a trimodal distribution (sum of three \ensuremath{\delta} functions) for a longitudinal random field at T=0, using a mean-field approximation. The phase diagram includes tricritical points, ordered critical points, a fourth-order point, critical end points, and a double critical end point. Our T=0 phase diagram is completely equivalent to the one obtained by Kaufman, Klunzinger, and Khurana for the random-field Ising model. We show that the temperature and the magnitude of the transverse field play a similar role.

Three-component model and tricritical points: A renormalization-group study. Two dimensions

Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths, Julia M. Yeomans +1 more

The global phase diagram for a three-component lattice gas or spin-one Ising model with general single-site and nearest-neighbor "ferromagnetic" interactions is worked out for two-dimensional lattices using a Migdal-Kadanoff recursion relation. It differs in important qualitative respects from the corresponding mean-field phase diagram. The set of fixed points and flows provides the characteristic phase diagrams of the three-state Potts multicritical point and the ordinary ($n=1$) tricritical point in a complete set of symmetry-breaking fields. The latter is associated, in this renormalization-group scheme, with seven distinct critical fixed points, a number which is surprisingly large.

Renormalization-group theory and calculations of tricritical behavior

Bernard Nienhuis, Michael Nauenberg

The conventional renormalization-group analysis of the tricritical behavior of a metamagnet is completed by a description of the first-order transition below the tricritical temperature, and the conditions for the discontinuity in the magnetization are explicitly verified in an Ising spin model. The singularity structure of the crossover scaling function is derived from relations between the scaling fields for the critical and tricritical fixed points. Numerical calculations illustrating various aspects of the theory are given for a square-lattice Ising model in a four-cell cluster approximation.

Tricritical points in systems with random fields

Amnon Aharony A

Mean-field theory and renormalization-group arguments are used to show that the phase transition in a system with a random ordering field becomes first order at sufficiently low transition temperature, provided the (symmetric) random-field distribution function has a minimum at zero field. The first-order region is separated from the second-order region by a tricritical point. Both the critical and the tricritical exponents at $d>4$ dimensions are shown to be the same as for the pure system at $d\ensuremath{-}2$ dimensions. The relevance to spin glasses and other systems is discussed. The new tricritical point is very different from all previously studied tricritical points, as it deviates from mean-field theory at $d=5$, and not at $d=3$. Although quantitative results are calculated only at $d=5\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ dimensions, the qualitative results are expected to apply at $d=3$.
