Population trapping in two-level models: Spectral and statistical properties

Abstract

The interaction of a two-level atom with a single-mode radiation field through multiphoton transitions is studied in terms of the dressed-state formalism. It is shown that when only certain dressed states are initially excited, population trapping occurs. We particularize these results for some well-known models of one- and two-photon transitions. Photon statistics of the cavity mode is analyzed in terms of the quasiprobability distribution Q(\ensuremath{\alpha}). It is shown that when population trapping occurs some two-time correlation functions become stationary, which allows one to obtain the resonance spectrum as the Fourier transform of the two-time dipole autocorrelation function.

Population trapping in a Raman-coupled model interacting with a two-mode quantized cavity field

Bimalendu Deb, Gautam Gangopadhyay, Deb Shankar Ray

We investigate the population trapping in a Raman-coupled three-level system interacting with a pump mode and a Stokes mode in a quantized cavity. We show that with an initial atom-field decoupled state and the atomic state prepared in a coherent superposition of two nondegenerate ground states, population trapping occurs when the phase of the atomic dipole is equal to the phase difference of the two modes and the two-mode field state satisfies a specific photon distribution. In the limit of large total photon number, under some specific conditions, the corresponding two-mode trapping state can be identified as a phase difference state. We have studied the variance of superposition mode quadrature and its evolution, statistical properties, and the phase-space properties of the two-mode trapping field state. It has been observed that although under different conditions the two-mode field exhibits both sub- and super-Poissonian statistics, no squeezing is observed in any case.

Spectral properties and nonlinear dynamics of spontaneous emission of a resonance photon by two-level atom trapped in damped nanocavity with a resonance mode

Vladislav Cheltsov

The time-dependent spectral properties and nonlinear dynamics of a spontaneous photon emitted by two level atom, trapped in damped nanocavity and coupled to a single resonance mode, have been investigated. The results have been obtained with the help of new nonperturbative approach by solving exactly the Schrödinger equation. The theory accounts exactly and simultaneously processes of emission, reabsorptions and leakage of photon. The solution was found with the Green functions formalism, supplemented with the novel algorithm in operating causal singular functions and fundamentals of the theory of quasi-stationary systems. The obtained distributions and emission dynamics are presented with plots as functions of photon frequency detuning and time for various value Γ/4g. For Γ/4g <1 the spectrum is a triplet inside the cavity and doublet outside it. In this case the total emission probability is described by decaying oscillations. For Γ/4g ≥ 1 and Γ/4g >> 1 the spectrum consists of a single central line decaying exponentially with profile depending on value Γ/4g.

Spectral properties and nonlinear dynamics of a spontaneous photon emitted by two level atom trapped in damped nanocavity with a single resonance mode

Vladislav Cheltsov

The nonperturbative theory of the cooperative spontaneous emission from a two level atom trapped in one-dimentional damped nanocavity with a single resonance mode is presented. The time-dependent spectral properties and nonlinear dynamics of a separate photon emission by the micro-molecular-like system "excited atom coupled to a resonance decaying mode" have been analyzed. The investigation has been carried out by solving the Schrödinger equation in the interaction picture with the help of the Green functions method in the Heitler-Ma's form. The formalism was supplemented with the novel algorithm in operating causal singular functions and with fundamentals of the theory of quasi-stationary systems. The proposed theory accounts automatically of both reabsorptions of emitted photon and its simultaneous escaping out of the cavity. Solutions of the wave equation were found without using intermediate virtual states and series expansions. In accordance with the theory of quasi-stationary systems the field of mode decaying exponentially in the empty nanocavity was represented with the Lorenz-shaped packet of stationary photonic states (quasi-modes). The electro-dipolar interaction between the atom and the mode field was adopted to be switched on suddenly. The expressions and plots of emission probabilities spectral densities together with photon emission probability dynamics as functions of time for various ratios Γ/4g of photon escaping rate Γ and coupling constant g are presented. For Γ/4g <1 the transient emission spectrum reveals the presence of two symmetrical side-bands and of the central peak, the latter decaying in time at the rate ∝ Γ/2 so that the final spectrum is a doublet. In this case the photon emission probability is described by decaying oscillations. On the contrary for Γ/4g ≥ 1 the spectrum is a singlet and the emission occurs in exponentially decaying ways.

Two-level system interacting with a finite-bandwidth thermal cavity mode

J. I. Cirac, Helmut Ritsch, P. Zoller

The interaction of a two-level system with a single quantized mode of the radiation field of finite bandwidth in a thermal state and coupled to background vacuum modes is considered theoretically. A hierarchy of equations for atom-field moments is derived and solved in terms of continued fractions. The population inversion, the spectrum of resonance fluorescence, and the photon statistics of the cavity mode are calculated.

Two Atom-single Mode Radiation Field Interaction

Ho Trung Dung, Nguyen Dinh Huyen

An exact solution for the problem of two two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode detuned quantized radiation field is presented. On resonance, an asymptotic result is derived for large coherent initial fields. It is shown that when the atoms are initially prepared in one of the semiclassical eigenstates, the atom-plus-field wavefunction remains almost factored into an atomic and a field part throughout the interaction. Under certain conditions, the atomic part evolves into a unique pure state at half-revival time. The effects of the cavity detuning on the dynamics of the atomic level occupation probabilities and emission spectra are studied. It is found, for non-symmetrical excitation, that far off-resonance the field acts like a virtual level by means of which the energy is transferred between the atoms. Due to non-zero detuning, nine-peaked spectra are observed and are given a clear explanation from the dressed-state viewpoint. It is established that in the case of symmetrical excitation, the intensity of the emission spectrum is two times larger than that in the case of non-symmetrical excitation.
