Justification of Vdovichenko's Method for the Ising Model on a Two-Dimensional Lattice

Abstract

In obtaining the free energy and the spontaneous magnetization of the Ising model on the square lattice, Vdovichenko used the expression of the partition function exact for a system in a plane to a system on a torus. A method of justifying this procedure, with proviso that the thermodynamic limit is taken, is given for the free energy and the spin-pair distribution function of the Ising model on a general two-dimensional lattice.

Phase Transition & Approximate Partition Function In Ising Model and Percolation In Two Dimension: Specifically For Square Lattices

Md. Hasanuzzaman

We study the percolation behavior of in two dimensional Ising model with spontaneous magnetization for pure and diluted lattices containing spins. Expression for partition function is calculated for pure lattice and is applied to find out the same for diluted lattices. Specific example is taken for nearest neighbor interaction in two dimensional square lattices and validity range of the calculation is checked. Behavior of partition function is studied at different temperatures and at different number of spins.

Exact low-temperature series expansion for the partition function of the two-dimensional zero-field s=1/2 Ising model on the infinite square lattice

Grzegorz Siudem, Agata Fronczak, Piotr Fronczak

In this paper, we provide the exact expression for the coefficients in the low-temperature series expansion of the partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model on the infinite square lattice. This is equivalent to exact determination of the number of spin configurations at a given energy. With these coefficients, we show that the ferromagnetic--to--paramagnetic phase transition in the square lattice Ising model can be explained through equivalence between the model and the perfect gas of energy clusters model, in which the passage through the critical point is related to the complete change in the thermodynamic preferences on the size of clusters. The combinatorial approach reported in this article is very general and can be easily applied to other lattice models.

Approximation method for spin-½ Ising models

S. Gartenhaus

An approximation for calculating the thermodynamic properties of spin-\textonehalf{} Ising models is described. The method is based on the formulation of Kramers and Wannier for the square lattice, and involves expressing the free energy in terms of the limiting maximum eigenvalue of a matrix sequence which represents the contribution from a single spin of the lattice. The application of this formulation to various two- and three-dimensional lattices shows that many of these are characterized by an identically structured matrix sequence with exactly two nonvanishing elements in each row and column. To explore the potential of using this similarity and its simplicity for analyzing Ising models we consider the two-dimensional square lattice in an external field and approximate the doubly infinite lattice by a semi-infinite one consisting of $n (\ensuremath{\le}10)$ infinitely long rows. Calculations are carried out and compared with (1) Onsager's formula for the free energy, (2) the Onsanger-Yang formula for the spontaneous magnetization, and (3) values calculated from series. Except for the region around the critical point where the correlation length exceeds $n$ lattice spacings, substantial agreement---to better than 12 places of decimals in some cases---is obtained. As an additional measure of the potential of this method, a value for the critical exponent $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is computed by the extrapolation of the magnetization along the critical isotherm. The result is found to be in excellent agreement with the known value for $\ensuremath{\delta}$.

Partition function and magnetization of two-dimensional Ising models in non-zero magnetic field: A semi-empirical approach

M V Vismaya, M.V. Sangaranarayanan

The partition functions of ferromagnetic Ising models of square lattices in a finite magnetic field is deduced using topological considerations within a heuristic graph-theoretical approach. These equations are derived separately for low and high temperature regimes while the exact solution of Onsager is obtained therefrom when the magnetic field is zero. The derived partition function equations here are almost similar to those given by Onsager, thus indicating a straight-forward protocol, even when the magnetic field is present. The spontaneous magnetization derived here using the Helmholtz free energy is identical with that arising from the exact solution. The partition functions lead to the known series expansions of the magnetization and zero-field susceptibility.

Diagrammatical Techniques for Two-Dimensional Ising Models. III. Ising Model to Vertex Model

Tohru Morita, Kazuyuki Tanaka

It is shown that an application of the techniques of division and integration of lattice sites reduces Ising models to equivalent vertex models. When the Ising model is on a two-dimensional lattice and no crossing occurs for any two of line segments connecting two lattice sites between which an interaction exists, the equivalent vertex model is shown to be a free-fermion vertex model. An argument is also given to show that the present method provides a method of expressing the partition function of a general Ising model on the square lattice, with noncrossing interactions within a square plaquette, in terms of a determinant of a 4×4 matrix.

Exact Distribution of Energies in the Two-Dimensional Ising Model

Paul D. Beale

The low-temperature series expansion for the partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice can be determined exactly for finite lattices using Kaufman's generalization of Onsager's solution. The exact distribution function for the energy can then be determined from the coefficients of the partition function. This provides an exact solution with which one can compare energy histograms determined in Monte Carlo simulations. This solution should prove useful for detailed studies of statistical and systematic errors in histogram reweighting.
