Partition function and magnetization of two-dimensional Ising models in non-zero magnetic field: A semi-empirical approach

Abstract

The partition functions of ferromagnetic Ising models of square lattices in a finite magnetic field is deduced using topological considerations within a heuristic graph-theoretical approach. These equations are derived separately for low and high temperature regimes while the exact solution of Onsager is obtained therefrom when the magnetic field is zero. The derived partition function equations here are almost similar to those given by Onsager, thus indicating a straight-forward protocol, even when the magnetic field is present. The spontaneous magnetization derived here using the Helmholtz free energy is identical with that arising from the exact solution. The partition functions lead to the known series expansions of the magnetization and zero-field susceptibility.

Partition function for the two-dimensional square lattice Ising model in a non-zero magnetic field-A heuristic analysis

G. Nandhini, M.V. Sangaranarayanan

The exact partition function of the two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising model pertaining to square lattices is derived for N sites in the case of a non-vanishing magnetic field. When the magnetic field is zero, the partition functions estimated from the present analysis are identical with those arising from Onsager's exact solution.

Estimation of the partition functions of two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models

M.V. Sangaranarayanan

Employing the exact solution of Onsager for two-dimensional Ising models, simple expressions are proposed for computing the partition function, magnetization, specific heat and susceptibility for non-zero magnetic fields of square lattices. The partition function in zero fields is also estimated and excellent agreement with the values arising from the exact solution of Onsager is demonstrated.

An empirical partition function for two-dimensional Ising Model in an external magnetic field

Rong Wei

There is no an accepted exact partition function (PF) for the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model with a non-zero external magnetic field to our knowledge. Here we infer an empirical PF for such an Ising model. We compare the PFs for two finite-size Ising lattices ($4\times 4$ and $4\times 6$) from this empirical PF with those from Wei (2018) (Wei, R.Q., 2018. An exact solution to the partition function of the finite-size Ising Model, arXiv: General Physics: 1805.01366.), and find that they are consistent very well. Based on this empirical PF, we further analyze and calculate the thermodynamic functions (heat capacity, magnetization, susceptibility) of this 2D Ising model and discuss the model's singularity semiquantitatively. Analysis and calculations from this PF show that they are coincident with those from other related studies; Especially the 2D Ising model in an external magnetic field has spontaneous magnetization (SM) calling the phenomenon at the critical temperature a phase transition, and the SM decreases with the increasing temperature. However, the decreasing variation of the SM here is different from that obtained by Yang (1952) from the 2D Ising model in a weak magnetic field.

Estimation of Magnetization, Susceptibility and Specific heat for the two-dimensional Ising Model in a Non-zero Magnetic field

G. Nandhini, Kumar, M. Vinoth, M.V. Sangaranarayanan

The partition functions for two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising model in a non-zero magnetic field have been derived for finite square lattices with the help of graph theoretical procedures, show-bit algorithm, enumeration of configurations and transfer matrix methods. A new recurrence relation valid for all lattice sizes is proposed. A novel method of computing the critical temperature has been demonstrated. The magnetization and susceptibility for infinite lattices in the presence of magnetic field is estimated. The critical exponent δ pertaining to the magnetization has also been computed.

Integrability and non-integrability in the Ising model

Michael Assis

The Ising model at magnetic field H=0 is one of the most important exactly solved models in statistical mechanics, solved on the square lattice in 1944 by Onsager, and later by others on the triangular lattice; its magnetic susceptibility at H=0 continues to be an unsolved aspect of the model, however. The susceptibility can either be viewed as a sum over all correlation functions of the integrable model at H=0, or else as a second derivative of the free energy of the non-integrable Ising model in a field. Therefore, its analytic properties, though derived from the non-integrable model, can be studied through series expansion of the integrable correlation functions. We begin this process by analyzing the first four terms in the form factor expansion of the diagonal correlation functions, and after summing over the diagonal form factor expansion, the first four terms of the diagonal susceptibility expansion. We have been able to reduce the form factor and susceptibility expansion terms, given as multi-dimensional integrals, to closed-form functions in all cases. Under the limit of H going to infinity with the interaction energy E going to minus infinity, the isotropic Ising model becomes a hard particle lattice gas model, with exclusion of nearest neighbor lattice sites. In this limit, the triangular lattice Ising model becomes the exactly solved hard hexagon model, while the square lattice becomes the non-integrable hard squares model. We study in detail these models for finite lattice sizes in order to understand the differences between integrable and non-integrable models. We consider the partition functions zeros and their density for different boundary conditions, and find notable differences in the density which is attributed to an extra factorization in the transfer matrices of hard hexagons which is absent in hard squares. We also study the special point at fugacity z=-1 of hard squares where all eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are equimodular and where the grand partition function's value depends on boundary conditions. | 300 pages

Partition functions of two-dimensional Ising models -- A perspective from Gauss hypergeometric functions

M.V. Sangaranarayanan

Employing heuristic susceptibility equations in conjunction with the well-known critical exponents, the magnetization and partition function for two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models are formulated in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions. The isomorphism existing between the Bragg-Williams approximation and the exact solution of Onsager is pointed out. The precise manner in which the critical exponents influence the partition functions is pointed out.
