Abstract

Self-defocusing of ordinary and extraordinary laser beams have been investigated in cadmium sulfide semiconductors in the near-band-edge absorption region. First it has been shown experimentally, that effects of the anisotropy nonlinear refraction induced by charge carriers created by single photon absorption is described whole set components of the third order nonlinear susceptibility tensor. New type of transverse optical bistability with increased amout of feedback due to nonlinear anisotropy was demonstrated.

We report the observation of cw transverse optical bistability without power hysteresis at 1-mW power levels in uncoated cadmium sulfide platelets. Optically induced refractive index changes as large as 0.15 are deduced from measurements of the transverse spatial ring profile.

Strong Light-Semiconductor Interactions in CdS, GaSe and Optical Bistability

В.С. Днепровский, A. I. Furtichev, V. Klimov +4 more

Changes in absorption and refractive index caused by the absorption of laser light in CdS and GaSe ("dynamic” nonlinearities which may lead to optical bistability /OB/) were investigated. Nonlinear effects may be very strong ("giant" nonlinearities) due to the resonant enhancement near the sharp band edge in the case of resonant excitation of excitons or interband transition.

Optical bistability based on self-focusing

John E. Bjorkholm, P. W. E. Smith, W. Tomlinson +3 more

We experimentally demonstrate a fundamentally new type of intrinsic optical bistability that requires no resonant optical cavity. Operation is based on mutual self-focusing of counterpropagating laser beams in a nonlinear medium. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fundamentally new type of optical bistability. 1 The operation of this new class of devices is based on self-focusing of light; the feedback required for bistability is provided by an apertured retroreflector. These devices exhibit intrinsic bistability (the feedback is optical) and are related to nonlinear waveguide devices proposed earlier. 2 Self-focusing occurs when a light beam having a nonuniform spatial profile (such as a Gaussian laser beam) and sufficient intensity propagates through a nonlinear medium having an intensity-dependent index of refraction. 3 Previously proposed devices that exhibited

Low-Power Optical Bistability in Cadmium Sulfide Platelets

M. Dagenais, Wayne F. Sharfin, Herbert G. Winful

We report the observation of transverse and whole-beam optical bistability in thin uncoated cadmium sulfide platelets at milliwatt power levels when a laser is tuned to the vicinity of a bound exciton resonance. The characteristics of both processes are quite different and are described separately.

Giant nonlinearities and low power optical bistability in cadmium sulphide platelets

M. Dagenais

Abstract Both whole-beam and transverse continuous wave optical bistability are observed at milliwatt power levels near the band gap in thin uncoated cadmium sulphide platelets. The whole-beam bistability is free from cavities and requires an absorption coefficient that increases with intensity.

Resonatorless Optical Bistability Based on Increasing Nonlinear Absorption

F. Hennebeger, H. Rossmann

Abstract A new type of optical bistability is presented. Instead of a resonator the intrinsic feedback between the optical excitation of carriers and their recombination is used. Optical bistability appears, if the absorption coefficient increases with growing carrier density. Both propagation effects and carrier diffusion are considered. Analytical model calculations are carried out for an abrupt behaviour of the absorption coefficient. The results explain the hysteresis in the transmittivity of CdS, recently observed.
