Abstract

In this paper we study the atom dissipation effect in a laser cavity. The cavity field mode is described by the Fox—Li quasimode due to the leakiness of the cavity. Our results show that the atom decay rate versus the decay rate of the quasimode is a Lorentz type. Effects of the atom—cavity detuning as well as cavity size are also discussed.

Entanglement Properties of Two-atoms Interacting with Field in Dissipative Cavity

张立辉 ZHANG Li-hui, 李高翔 LI Gao-xiang

By means of the quantum theory, the interaction between two-atoms located inside a dissipative cavity and single-mode coherent field was studied. The entanglement properties, between two atoms and between two-atoms and light fields, were analyzed. In addition, the reason that the decay of the cavity field and the detuning between the atom and cavity field affect the evolution of entanglement was discussed. The results show that when there is cavity loss, entanglement between the atoms and light fields may occur, however entanglement gradually disappear in the long time limit. Also, the detuning between the atom and cavity field significantly affects the entanglement. The entanglement between two atoms initially in the maximally entangled states is gradually weakened due to the decay of the light field, but the detuning between the atom and the cavity field can inhibit this decay.

Quantum decoherence of excitons in a leaky cavity with quasimode

Yu-xi Liu, C. P. Sun, Sixia Yu

We investigate the quantum decoherence of a mesoscopically superposed states of excitons in a quantum well placed within a leaky cavity. Based on the factorization theory of quantum dissipation, our investigation shows that the coherence of the superposed states of the excitons will decrease in an oscillating form when the cavity field is of the quasimode form. Regarding the effects of the thermal cavity fields on the quantum decoherence of the superposition states of the exciton, we observe that the higher the temperature of the environment, the shorter the decoherence characteristic time.

Effect of dissipative forces on the theory of a single-atom microlaser

N. Nayak

A single-atom microlaser involving Poissonian input of atoms with a fixed flight time through an optical resonator is described. The influence of the cavity reservoir during the interactions of successive individual atoms with the cavity field is included in the analysis. Atomic decay is also considered, as it is nonnegligible in the optical regime. During the random intervals of absence of any atom in the cavity, the field evolves under its own dynamics. The steady-state characteristics of the cavity field are discussed. Away from laser threshold, the field can be nonclassical in nature.

Linear entropy evolution in a dissipative system of two atoms and cavity field

Xiong Yang, Zhao-Yang Tong, Shao-Hua Xiang +1 more

Some investigations have been made on the evolution of the linear entropies of atom-field system, in which two identical two-level atoms simultaneously interact with a single-mode dissipative cavity field under large detuning. The effects of the initial atom states and the dissipative factors of the cavity on all linear entropies are also discussed. The results show that the influence of the cavity decay constant on different kinds of Bell states is completely different, and the state |Ψ〉12 is a robust entangled state against the decoherence while the state |Φ〉12 is a fragile entangled state.

Electromagnetic decay into a narrow resonance in an optical cavity

H. M. Lai, P. T. Leung, K. Young

The spontaneous electromagnetic decay of a two-level atom coupled to a narrow cavity resonance is investigated rigorously in terms of the (Hermitian) modes of the ``universe'' rather than the (dissipative) quasimodes of the cavity. Special attention is paid to the strong-coupling regime (atomic linewidth \ensuremath{\Gamma}\ensuremath{\gtrsim} cavity resonance width \ensuremath{\gamma}), in which there are significant corrections to the golden rule. In particular, spontaneous decay is most rapid for intermediate values of the quality factor Q of the cavity resonance. The photon line shape, the effect of several cavity resonances, and the competition of several transitions are also investigated. The additivity of partial rates does not hold, and in some circumstances, the addition of an extra decay channel may reduce the total decay rate. These results are relevant to optical processes observed in dielectric microspheres, and also to usual laser cavities.

The standard model in cavity quantum electrodynamics. I. General features of mode functions for a Fabry-Perot cavity

Bryan J. Dalton, P. L. Knight

In the present and the accompanying paper a justification of the standard model of cavity quantum electrodynamics is given in terms of a quasi-mode theory of macroscopic canonical quantization. The coupling of the cavity quasi-mode to external quasi-modes is treated for the representative case of the three-dimensional Fabry-Perot cavity. The general form of the travelling and trapped mode functions for this cavity are derived in this paper and the mode-mode coupling constants are calculated in the accompanying paper. The slow dependence of the coupling constants with the mode frequency difference demonstrates that the conditions for Markovian damping of the cavity quasimode are satisfied. As also discussed in the accompanying paper, the interaction of radiative atoms with cavity quasi-modes is associated with reversible energy exchanges between atom and cavity and represented by Rabi coupling constants. The interaction of radiative atoms located within the cavity with sideways travelling external quasi-modes involves slowly varying coupling constants and is associated with irreversible spontaneous emission dampling. The basic processes represented in the standard cavity quantum electrodynamics model and the associated coupling constant and decay rates thereby follow from the quasi-mode theory.
