FISHER SCALING IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL ISING MAGNETIC LATTICE-GAS

Abstract

The critical properties of two-dimensional Ising magnetic lattice-gas model are studied by Monte-Carlo simulation in the canonical ensemble. The results are analyzed considering the modified Fisher scaling for systems with zero specific heat exponent, which applies when there are constrained variables such as the density in the canonical ensemble. The estimates of the exponents are obtained and compared to the exponents of the Ising universality class to which the model is expected to belong.

Finite-size scaling in the canonical ensemble

Youjin Deng, Henk W. J. Blöte

We investigate the critical scaling behavior of finite systems in the canonical ensemble. The essential difference with the grand canonical ensemble. i.e., the constraint on the number of particles, is already known to lead to the Fisher renormalization phenomenon that modifies the thermal critical singularities. We show that, in observables that are not Fisher renormalized, it also leads to a finite-size effect governed by an exponent $y_1$ that depends on the temperature exponent $y_t$ and the dimensionality $d$ as $y_1=-|2y_t-d|$. We verify this prediction by a Monte Carlo analysis of several two-dimensional lattice models in the percolation, the Ising and the 3-state Potts universality classes.

Monte Carlo studies of finite-size scaling in the Gibbs ensemble at criticality for the two-dimensional Ising model

K. K. Mon

In this paper we study finite-size scaling at criticality in the Gibbs ensemble with Monte Carlo simulations. A recent lattice-gas version of Gibbs-ensemble sampling for the two-dimensional Ising-model magnet with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions on two subsystems of L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L lattices is considered. Both square and triangular lattices with a range of lattice sizes are simulated at bulk criticality. We are interested in the question of universality for the fourth-order cumulant of the order-parameter distribution in the Gibbs ensemble. Estimates of -1.954\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005 and -1.9543\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005 are obtained for the square and triangular lattices, respectively. These values confirm universality within the Gibbs ensemble, but are statistically different from the canonical-ensemble values of \ensuremath{\sim}-1.83. We point out that one must interpret this apparent ensemble dependence with care. Unlike in the canonical ensemble, the order parameter in the Gibbs ensemble is the subsystem magnetization. Its fourth-order cumulant is not simply related to the usual fourth magnetic-field derivative of the total free energy. Standard finite-size scaling analysis of data for the total specific heat, subsystem magnetization, and susceptibility are also considered and found to be in good agreement with finite-size scaling.

Critical finite-size scaling with constraints: Fisher renormalization revisited

M. Krech

The influence of a thermodynamic constraint on the critical finite-size scaling behavior of three-dimensional Ising and XY models is analyzed by Monte-Carlo simulations. Within the Ising universality class constraints lead to Fisher renormalized critical exponents, which modify the asymptotic form of the scaling arguments of the universal finite-size scaling functions. Within the XY universality class constraints lead to very slowly decaying corrections inside the scaling arguments, which are governed by the specific heat exponent alpha. If the modification of the scaling arguments is properly taken into account in the scaling analysis of the data, finite-size scaling functions are obtained, which are independent of the constraint as anticipated by analytic theory.

Ferromagnetic Phase Transition in a Heisenberg Fluid: Monte Carlo Simulations and Fisher Corrections to Scaling

I. M. Mryglod, I. P. Omelyan, R. Folk

The magnetic phase transition in a Heisenberg fluid is studied by means of the finite size scaling technique. We find that even for larger systems, considered in an ensemble with fixed density, the critical exponents show deviations from the expected lattice values similar to those obtained previously. This puzzle is clarified by proving the importance of the leading correction to the scaling that appears due to Fisher renormalization with the critical exponent equal to the absolute value of the specific heat exponent alpha. The appearance of such new corretions to scaling is a general feature of systems with constraints.

PHASE TRANSITIONS IN THE FRUSTRATED ISING MODEL ON TRIANGULAR LATTICE

A.K. Murtazaev, Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, М. К. Бадиев

Critical properties of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice with interactions of the next-to-nearest neighbors are investigated by a replica Monte-Carlo method. Using the finite-size scaling theory the static critical exponents of specific heat, ordering parameter, susceptibility, correlation radius as well as the Fisher exponent are calculated.
