Abstract

By exploiting a narrow-linewidth dipole-laser source we measure the hyperfine structure of the $^{5}$${\mathit{S}}_{2}$ state of $^{17}\mathrm{O}$. Nuclear parameters can be calculated from the measured hyperfine structure. Recorded collision-free linewidths allow an estimate of the lifetime of levels involved in a new scheme proposed for the cooling of atomic oxygen.

Hyperfine structure of laser-cooling transitions in fermionic erbium-167

Albert Frisch, K. Aikawa, Michael F. Mark +3 more

We have measured and analyzed the hyperfine structure of two lines, one at 583 nm and one at 401 nm, of the only stable fermionic isotope of atomic erbium as well as determined its isotope shift relative to the four most-abundant bosonic isotopes. Our work focuses on the $J\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J+1$ laser cooling transitions from the $[\text{Xe}]4{f}^{12}6{s}^{2}{(}^{3}{H}_{6})$ ground state to two levels of the excited $[\text{Xe}]4{f}^{12}6s6p$ configuration, which are of major interest for experiments on quantum degenerate dipolar Fermi gases. From a fit to the observed spectra of the strong optical transition at 401 nm we find that the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine constants for the excited state are ${A}_{e}/h=\ensuremath{-}100.1(3)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$ and ${B}_{e}/h=\ensuremath{-}3079(30)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MHz}$, respectively. The hyperfine spectrum of the narrow transition at 583 nm, was previously observed and accurate ${A}_{e}$ and ${B}_{e}$ coefficients are available. A simulated spectrum based on these coefficients agrees well with our measurements. We have also determined the hyperfine constants using relativistic configuration-interaction ab initio calculations. The agreement between the ab initio and fitted data for the ground state is better than 0.1%, while for the two excited states the agreement is 1% and 11% for the ${A}_{e}$ and ${B}_{e}$ constants, respectively.

First Optical Hyperfine Structure Measurement in an Atomic Anion

Arne Fischer, C. Canali, Ulrich Warring +2 more

We have investigated the hyperfine structure of the transition between the 5d{7}6s{2} {4}F{9/2}{e} ground state and the 5d{6}6s{2}6p {6}D{J}{o} excited state in the negative osmium ion by high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy. This transition is unique because it is the only known electric-dipole transition in atomic anions and might be amenable to laser cooling. From the observed hyperfine structure in 187Os- and 189Os- the yet unknown total angular momentum of the bound excited state was found to be J=9/2. The hyperfine structure constants of the {4}F{9/2}{e} ground state and the {6}D{9/2}{o} excited state were determined experimentally and compared to multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations. Using the knowledge of the ground and excited state angular momenta, the full energy level diagram of 192Os- in an external magnetic field was calculated, revealing possible laser cooling transitions.

Two-photon two-color diode laser spectroscopy of the Rb 5D5/2state

Timothy T. Grove, V. Sánchez-Villicaña, B C Duncan +2 more

We report on spectroscopic measurements of the Rb 5 D 5/2 state performed using two-photon excitation with a resonant intermediate state. With the two beams (5 S 1/2 → 5 P 3/2 at 780 nm and 5 P 3/2 → 5 D 5/2 at 776 nm) counterpropagating, the spectra are Doppler-free and the signals are very robust, even in a room temperature vapor. This is due to the near match of the transition wavelengths. The 5 D 5/2 hyperfine constants have been measured and compared to previous determinations. We have also performed the excitation in a sample of laser-cooled atoms and compare these results to those obtained at room temperature. The fact that the 5 P 3/2 → 5 D 5/2 transition is narrow, robust, diode-laser accessible, and relatively immune to AC-Stark shifts, may make it a promising candidate for a frequency reference at 776 nm.

Transition strengths and lifetimes measured by optical nutation

Arlee V. Smith, T. D. Raymond

A transform-limited light pulse from a tunable laser can be used to measure atomic lifetimes much shorter or much longer than the light puke duration by measuring linewidths in the case of short lifetimes or decay rates in the case of long lifetimes. However, when the atomic lifetime is comparable to the duration of the exciting pulse, these methods are difficult to apply. We demonstrate that, for the latter case, an optical nutation measurement yields both lifetimes and transition strengths with high accuracy. We prepare oxygen atoms in a single angular momentum state (J, mj) in a collision-free and Doppler-free environment.

Direct measurement of the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using diode lasers

Ayan Banerjee, Umakant D. Rapol, Vasant Natarajan A

We demonstrate a technique for directly measuring the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using two frequency-stabilized diode lasers. Each laser has a linewidth of order 1 MHz and precise tunability: one laser is tuned to a hyperfine transition in the D1 line, and the other laser to a hyperfine transition in the D2 line. The outputs of the lasers are fed into a scanning Michelson interferometer that measures the ratio of their wavelengths accurately. To illustrate the technique, we measure the fine-structure interval in Rb, and obtain a value of 237.6000(3)(5) cm−1 for the hyperfine-free 5P3/2–5P1/2 interval.

Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of the laser-cooling Fe I 358-nm line

Nicolas Huet, Manon Pettens, Thierry Bastin

We report on the measurement of the isotope shifts of the $3{d}^{7}4s\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}a\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{}^{5}{F}_{5}\text{--}3{d}^{7}4p\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}z\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{}^{5}{G}_{6}^{o}$ Fe i line at 358 nm between all four stable isotopes $^{54}\text{Fe},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{56}\text{Fe},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{57}\text{Fe}$, and $^{58}\text{Fe}$, as well as the hyperfine structure of that line for $^{57}\text{Fe}$, the only stable isotope having a nonzero nuclear spin. This line is of primary importance for laser-cooling applications. In addition, an experimental value of the field and specific mass shift coefficients of the transition is reported as well as the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole coupling constant $A$ of the transition excited state in $^{57}\text{Fe}$, namely $A(3{d}^{7}4p\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}z\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{}^{5}{G}_{6}^{o})=31.241(48)$ MHz. The measurements were carried out by means of laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy performed on an isotope-enriched iron atomic beam. All measured frequency shifts are reported with relative uncertainties below one third percent.
