Photon echo as a tool for optical digital processing

Abstract

The photon echo application for optical digital processing of discrete images by the method of managing operators was examined. Photon echo is the pulse of light which is emitted spontaneously from a system of atoms previously irradiated by two or more coherent light pulses with length and power of 102divided by10-1 ps and 104divided by105 kW, respectively. These systems of resonant atoms are crystals with various paramagnetic activators. By using photon echo, the resonant systems are able to store and retrieve wave-front and temporal form of one of the excitation pulses. The photon echo application for information processing allows one to solve a number of problems with high efficiency. Different photon echo generating conditions can be utilized practically in all processor components, which creates certain prospects for using this effect in optical computing purposes.

Principles of construction of optical echo processors

Edward A. Manykin, N. A. Chernyshev

An analysis is made of the possibility of utilization of the photon echo effect in optical digital processing of discrete images by the method of control operators, which makes it possible to solve a number of problems. Different regimes for the excitation of the photon echo are in practice usable in all component parts of a processor, which makes this effect potentially promising for the use in optical data processing.

Numerical Solution and Applications of Photon Echo

Longzhao Lu, Cheng Li, Xiangyang Yu

Important applications in optical information storage and processing based on photon echo have been developed. An accurate and effective numerical method to solve the Maxwell-Bloch equations that are used to describe the optical pulse propagation and interaction with inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium will be introduced.Two-pulse photon echo is calculated then photon echo and multiple-pulse photon echoes are stimulated in optical thin(thick) media by using the method, and the physical properties of those echoes are analyzed. The results show that the approach to storage and retrieval of light using multiple-pulse photon echoes based on stimulated photon echo is an effective mode.

Optical processing by using the two-pulse photon echo

Sergey M. Zakharov

Principles for analog and digital optical processing based on the two- pulse photon echo (PE) phenomenon are considered. Various architecture designs of optical pattern recognition systems and optical processors for analog and digital processing are discussed. Also various schemes of digital processors for vector-matrix multiplication with the pixel structure and of holographic type are suggested. These realizations depend on using of digital temporal or spatial mixed binary multiplication based on the PE.

Photon echo in a ring cavity: pulse area approach

Sergey A. Moiseev, R. V. Urmancheev

The active use of resonators in quantum technologies increases the interest of their application in the creation of optical and microwave quantum memory. The use of photon and spin echoes opens up the possibility of storing a large number of light pulses in one such memory cell. High efficiency of such quantum memory is achieved in an optically dense resonant media, in which the formation of a photon (spin) echo can be accompanied by an increase in the nonlinear interaction of light with atoms causing the appearance of multiple echo signals. In this paper, we develop the pulse area approach to study general nonlinear properties of the primary and multi-pulse echo signals excited in a two-level atomic ensemble located in ring cavities with volumetric and surface modes. Conditions under which one or more echo pulses can be generated are analyzed. The solutions obtained are compared with recent experimental results. We show that the area theorem is one of the simplest and most powerful analytical tools for studying a highly nonlinear and dynamical process of the formation of the sequence of photon/spin echo signals in resonant media inside the resonator.

Method for optical data processing based on a two-pulse photon echo

Sergey M. Zakharov, Eduard A. Manykin

The principles of optical processing based on dynamic spatial—temporal properties of two-pulse photon echo signals are considered. The properties of a resonant medium as an on-line filter of temporal and spatial frequencies are discussed. These properties are due to the sensitivity of such a medium to the Fourier spectrum of the second exiting pulse. Degeneracy of quantum resonant systems, demonstrated by the coherent response dependence on the square of the amplitude of the second pulse, can be used for 'simultaneous' correlation processing of optical 'signals'. Various methods for the processing of the Fourier optical image are discussed.
