Modification of medium phase memory under influence of pulsed inhomogeneous magnetic field

Abstract

We consider retrieving of a light pulse stored in a medium of atoms with Λ-configuration of levels under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency when a pulse of the external magnetic field inhomogeneous over the medium length is applied to the medium during the absence of the control field. It is shown that the coherence of lower levels of medium atoms acquires a phase depending on the coordinate along the medium and that the temporal shape of the retrieved pulse, if it is recorded interferometrically, reflects the coordinate dependence of the magnetic field.

Variants of controlling light pulses under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency with energy degeneracy

A. S. Losev, A. S. Troshin

The interaction of signal and control fields with an extended medium of two-level atoms with degenerate energy levels is considered in the semiclassical approximation. The effects of recording, storing, and release of signal pulses are studied for several schemes under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The possibility of inverting the succession of the reconstructed pulses is shown.

Manipulating the retrieval of stored light pulses

Anil K. Patnaik, Fam Le Kien, K. Hakuta

We consider storage and retrieval of light based on electromagnetically induced transparency in an atomic medium using nonadiabatic switching of a control field. We derive various conditions for writing (and reading) the light information to (and from) the atomic coherence. We obtain an analytical solution for the retrieval of the stored pulse that is in excellent agreement with the full numerical results. We identify the origin of distortion at the output and derive a condition to correct the distortions by manipulating the retrieval process.

Interference effects in light propagation in a three-level atomic medium in the loop configuration

Jakub Korociński, Andrzej Raczyński, Jarosław Zaremba +1 more

A strong control field coupling two empty states of a lambda system makes the medium transparent for a probe pulse. This phenomenon known as electromagnetically induced transparency is here modified by switching a weak microwave field coupling two lower states of the system. As a response to the control and microwave fields, the medium itself acts as a source of an electromagnetic wave which interferes with the incoming pulse. The properties of the net pulse leaving the sample, in particular its magnitude and multipeak shape, will be analyzed in detail, depending on the model parameters.

Subluminal and superluminal light pulse propagation under external magnetic field in a vee-type three-level atomic medium

Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien +4 more

In this work, we investigate subluminal and superluminal light propagation in a vee-type three-level atomic medium under an external magnetic field. The dispersion and absorption behaviors are studied for the cases of absence and presence of a magnetic field. It is found that under an electromagnetically induced transparency condition, the light pulse can be switched between subluminal and superluminal propagation by ON-OFF switching of the magnetic field. Finally, the transient response of the medium is discussed, which shows that the considered scheme has potential applications in magneto-optic switching devices. Dynamics of a stored Zeeman coherence grating in an external magnetic field

D. Moretti, D. Felinto, J. W. R. Tabosa +1 more

We investigate the evolution of a Zeeman coherence grating induced in a cold atomic cesium sample in the presence of an external magnetic field. The gratings are created in a three-beam light storage configuration using two quasi-collinear writing and reading laser pulses with a counterpropagating pulse after a variable time delay. The phase-conjugated pulse arising from the atomic sample is monitored. Collapses and revivals of the retrieved pulse are observed for different polarizations of laser beams and for different directions of the applied magnetic field. While magnetic field inhomogeneities are responsible for the decay of the coherent atomic response, a five-fold increase in the coherence decay time, with respect to no applied magnetic field, is obtained for an appropriate choice of the direction of the applied magnetic field. A simplified theoretical model illustrates the role of the magnetic field mean and its inhomogeneity on the collective atomic response.
