We investigate the photon statistics in the light emitted by a microcavity containing a semiconductor quantum well. An analytical expression of the light-emitted autocorrelation function in the weak pumping regime is derived. We discuss photon statistical similarities with an atomic cavity.
Quantum mechanically indistinguishable particles such as photons may show collective behavior. Therefore, an appropriate description of a light field must consider the properties of an assembly of photons instead of independent particles. We have studied multiphoton correlations up to fourth order in the single-mode emission of a semiconductor microcavity in the weak and strong coupling regimes. The counting statistics of single photons were recorded with picosecond time resolution, allowing quantitative measurement of the few-photon bunching inside light pulses. Our results show bunching behavior in the strong coupling case, which vanishes in the weak coupling regime as the cavity starts lasing. In particular, we verify the n factorial prediction for the zero-delay correlation function of n thermal light photons.
The interaction between a squeezed vacuum and a semiconductor quantum dot microcavity is studied. The influence of this interaction on the photon statistics, one measurable quantity, is investigated in the presence of the electron–phonon interaction. When the system interacts with the squeezed vacuum, the non-classical features of the emitted photons are studied. It turns out that the photon counting statistics depend on the detuning and temperature. The emitted photons also exhibit non-classical features such as anti-bunching, and their non-classical features depend on the degree of squeezing. Moreover, it is found that the stronger the squeezed vacuum, the weaker the non-classical features in the photon counting statistics.
We study how the interplay of weak excitation regime of quantum well confined in a semiconductor microcavity affects the dynamics of correlations and the statistical properties of photons. We discuss how the system parameters can impact the quantum entropy and Mandel’s parameter, and illustrate our concerns with numerical simulations. We have found that the enhancement of the correlations and the control of the statistical properties of photons in semiconductor microcavities for multi-photon excitation highly benefits from the combination of the strength of the field, excitonic spontaneous emission rate, cavity dissipative rate, and the coupling between the exciton and photons. Our results may have important implications not only for those specially interested in quantum optics and information, but also for the general physics community.
Abstract A quantum behavior of the light emitted by exciton polaritons excited in a pillar semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum well is investigated. Considering the bare excitons and photon modes as coupled quantum oscillators allows for an accurate accounting of the nonlinear and dissipative effects. In particular, using the method of quantum states presentation in a quantum phase space via quasiprobability functions (namely, a P-function and a Wigner function), we study the effect of the laser and the exciton-photon detuning on the second order correlation function of the emitted photons. We determine the conditions for the phenomena of bunching, giant bunching, and antibunching of the emitted light. In particular, we predict the effect of a giant bunching for the case of a large exciton to photon population ratio. Within the domain of parameters supporting a bistability regime we demonstrate the effect of bunching of photons.
