Spin Peierls Fluctuation and Nonlinear Excitations in One-Dimensional Systems

Abstract

Effects of spin-Peierls fluctuation are examined in models of one-dimensional conductors. One-dimensional strongly correlated systems coupled to dynamical lattice distortion or polarization are examined by quantum Monte Carlo studies. Excitations are given by spinless charge solitons and neutral spin solitons when the system is doped away from a Mott insulator. A pairing mechanism due to a dynamical spin-Peierls fluctuation is discussed. Numerical results on the spin gap formation and the enhancement of pairing correlations in a dimerized t-J model and doped spin-1 Heisenberg model in one dimension are summarized.

Dimerization and Solitons in One-Dimensional XY-Z Antiferromagnets

Takashi Nakano, Hidetoshi Fukuyama

Our previous calculations of the lattice distortion and the formation energy of a soliton in the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-Peierls systems are refined and extended to the case of X Y - Z model. The spin degree of freedom are represented by the phase Hamiltonian with the help of boson representation of fermions introduced by the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Parameters in this phase Hamiltonian are adjusted so that spin wave velocity and exponent of correlation function agree with exact results. This adjustment is shown to give also exact spin susceptibility in the absence of lattice distortion. Based on this phase Hamiltonian of the X Y - Z model localized excitations (solitons) in the presence of lattice distortions are examined in details including the width, the formation energy and the magnetic field dependence.

Fluctuation effects of nonlinear coupling between spin and charge excitations on dynamical correlation functions of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Norikazu Tomita, Keiichirō Nasu

We study fluctuation effects of nonlinear coupling between spin and charge excitations on dynamical correlation functions of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling. Two kinds of dynamical correlation functions, dynamical spin- and charge-correlation functions, are calculated by means of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the dynamical spin-correlation function has a new peak on the high-energy side of the well-known magnon peak. Since this peak always appears above the charge-excitation gap, it should originate from a charge fluctuation induced through a final-state interaction of magnon creation. We also show that in the dynamical charge-correlation function, a charge-transfer excitation peak is broadened by fluctuation effects due to magnons. These results clearly show that spin and charge excitations are nonlinearly coupled in this system.

Interaction between impurities and solitons in quasi one-dimensional spin-Peierls systems

David Augier, P. Hansen, Didier Poilblanc +2 more

The role of the spin-phonon coupling in spin-Peierls chains doped with spin-0 or spin-1 impurities is investigated by various numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group. Various treatments of the lattice, in a fully quantum mechanical way, classically in the adiabatic approximation or using a fixed three-dimensional dimerization pattern are compared. For an isolated chain, strong bonds form between the two spin-1/2 sites next to the impurity site, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. We also show that these excitations do not bind to spin-0 impurities but are weakly attracted by spin-1 impurities. However, the interchain elastic coupling generates an effective confining potential at the non-magnetic impurity site which can lead to the formation of soliton-impurity bound states. We also predict that a soliton and an antisoliton bound to two impurities on the same chain can annihilate each other when the separation between the impurities is smaller than a critical value depending on the interchain elastic constant.

Soliton Energetics in Peierls-Hubbard Models

David K Campbell, Thomas DeGrand, S. Mazumdar

We study the effect of electron-electron correlations on the energetics of solitons in electron-phonon models of quasi one-dimensional materials. In these combined Peierls-Hubbard models, by use of quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we (1) establish that the ground state of an odd chain, singly charged or neutral, is a soliton; (2) calculate neutral-soliton creation energies; and (3) prove that "soliton doping" persists in the presence of correlations. We discuss the relevance of our results for trans-polyacetylene.

Spin Dimer State Model andSpin-Phonon Coupling Model of Superconductivity

Masatoshi Imada

A mechanism of superconductivity coming from the doping of mobile fermions into the spin dimerized insulator such as spin Peierls state, valence bond glass, Heisenberg spins with next nearest neighbor exchange coupling and the Haldane gap state is discussed. The doping of fermions with narrow band into a Mott insulator with a spin gap results in the superconducting long range order in two- and three-dimensions, while results in the power law divergence of the pairing susceptibility with Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid character of charge in one-dimension. An example of numerical calculation in one-dimension is shown. The possible relevance of this mechanism to high-temperature superconductivity, where dynamical coupling of lattice distortion to spin may play a crucial role, is discussed. A relevant model Hamiltonian with spin-phonon coupling and dynamical spin-Peierls fluctuation is proposed.

Lattice dynamical effects on the Peierls transition in one-dimensional metals and spin chains

Holger Fehske, Michael Holicki, Er Weiße

Summary: The interplay of charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom is studied for quasi-one-dimensional electron and spin systems coupled to quantum phonons. Special emphasis is put on the influence of the lattice dynamics on the Peierls transition. Using exact diagonalization techniques the ground-state and spectral properties of the Holstein model of spinless fermions and of a frustrated Heisenberg model with magneto-elastic coupling are analyzed on finite chains. In the non-adiabatic regime a (T = 0) quantum phase transition from a gapless Luttinger-liquid/spin-fluid state to a gapped dimerized phase occurs at a nonzero critical value of the electron/spin-phonon interaction. To study the nature of the spin-Peierls transition at finite temperatures for the infinite system, an alternative Green’s function approach is applied to the magnetostrictive XY model. With increasing phonon frequency the structure factor shows a remarkable crossover from soft-mode to central-peak behaviour. The results are discussed in relation to recent experiments on CuGeO3. 1
