Effects of coherence of a three-level Rydberg atom in ^ configuration on photon statistics in a high Q cavity

Abstract

The photon distribution probability and the mean photon number in a high Q cavity are calculated based on the Jaynes-Cummings model for double m-photon lasers. The results show that the collapse and revival of the mean photon number are affected by the atomic coherences.

Field statistics in some generalized Jaynes-Cummings models

Surendra Singh

Photon statistics in some fully quantized models of the interaction of a two-level atom with a single-mode radiation field have been studied using the operator equations of motion. Expressions for the photon number distribution and the mean photon number are presented for various initial conditions. It is found that the mean photon number may show decays and revivals of coherence similar to those of the atomic inversion in the coherent-state Jaynes-Cummings model. Application of these models to the study of multiphoton laser, absorption, and emission processes is also discussed.

Theoretical aspects of the quantum electrodynamics of two-level atoms in high-Q cavities

Amitabh Joshi, S. V. Lawande

The Jaynes-Cummings model provides a useful means of studying several quantum electrodynamic effects in matter-radiation interaction. One such effect is the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of Rabi oscillations. Various aspects of this phenomenon are studied in terms of the dynamical evolution of the atom as well as the statistical properties of the field. In particular, the sensitivity of collapses and revivals on the initial photon statistics, the cavity field damping mechanism is highlighted. For this purpose the basic model of Jaynes and Cummings has been extended and modified. Some multiatom effects are also discussed.

MICROMASER INJECTED WITH ULTRA-COLD V-TYPE THREE-LEVEL ATOMS:EFFECTS OF ATOMIC COHERENCE ON PHOTON STATISTICS

Liang Wen-Qing, Chu Kai-Qin, Zhi‐Ming Zhang +2 more

The effects of the atomic coherence on the photon statistics of the micromaser injected with ultra-cold V-type three-level atoms are studied. In the plot of the atomic emission probability versus the cavity length, there are resonance peaks and non-resonance platforms, which can be adjusted by the atomic coherence parameters. These features of emission probability affect the properties of photon statistics directly. In the plot of the mean number of photons versus the cavity length, there are resonance peaks and non-resonance platforms, too. Given a cavity length, with the change of the atomic coherence parameters, the distribution of photon numbers can move towards the large or small photon numbers, and the mean number of photons increases or decreases accordingly. We also find, with appropriate atomic coherence parameters, that the photon statistics are sub-Poissonian in large region of the cavity length.

Quantum collapse and revival of Rydberg atoms in cavities of arbitrary Q at finite temperature

N. Nayak, R. Bullough, B. V. Thompson +1 more

Numerical calculations on the Jaynes-Cummings model in a cavity of arbitrary Q at finite temperature, using the master equation approach, are discussed. Effects due to mismatch of the atomic transition frequency and cavity mode frequency are included. Results relate to recent experiments on /sup 85/Rb Rydberg atoms.>

Photon Emission Dynamics of a Two-Level Atom in a Cavity

Chang Jae Lee

The collapse and revival of quantum states appear in diverse areas of physics. In quantum optics the occurrence of such a phenomena in the evolution of an atomic state, interacting with a light field initially in a coherent state, was predicted by using the Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM), and subsequently demonstrated experimentally. In this paper we revisit the JCM with the Monte-Carlo wave function approach and investigate the time evolution of the photon emission rate of the atom in a cavity. Analytical and numerical quantum trajectory calculations show that the cavity and the initial field statistics strongly influence the photon emission dynamics. A coherent field indeed gives rise to a collapse and revival behavior that mirrors atomic state evolution. However, there are differences between the two. The emission rate for a field in a Fock number state exhibits a sinusoidal oscillation, and there exists a quiescent period for a thermal field. These properties are quite different from those in free space. It is also shown that the fluctuation in photon emission is much less than that of the atomic population.

Effects of cavity-field statistics on atomic entanglement in a two-mode Jaynes–Cummings model with intensity-dependent coupling

Sudha Singh, Amrita Amrita

We study the entanglement properties of a pair of two-level Rydberg atoms passing one after another into a lossless cavity with two modes. The atoms interact with the cavity field via an intensity-dependent, non-degenerate two-photon transition. The initial joint state of two successive atoms that enter the cavity is unentangled. Interactions mediated by the two-mode cavity photon field result in the final two-atom mixed entangled type state. The entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state as a function of the Rabi angle, gt, is calculated for the two-mode Fock state field, coherent field, and thermal field, respectively, inside the cavity. The change in the magnitude of atomic entanglement with cavity photon number in two modes has been studied.
