Abstract

By employing a microstructured fiber of which zero-dispersion wavelength is 820 nm, significantly large photon-number squeezing of -4.6 dB was obtained using a 100-fs femtosecond laser pulse. The quantum nonlinear Schrödinger equation was solved to explain these experiments.

Generation of quantum correlation between co-propagating pulses in optical fibers

Kenichi Hirosawa, H. Furumochi, Atsushi Tada +4 more

Experimental demonstration of more than 50% photon-number squeezing obtained using microstructure fibers (MFs) , of which zero-dispersion wavelength locates at 820 nm, in a spectral filtering scheme with 40-fs laser pulses at /spl lambda/ = 810 nm is reported. The highest photon-number squeezing of -4.6 dB is obtained when a soliton-like Stokes Raman pulse, which broke up from the main pulse, exhibiting a self-frequency shift toward the longer wavelength, is preserved by low-pass spectral filtering from the white-light spectrum generated from the 30-cm MF.

Photon Number Squeezing of Ultrabroadband Laser Pulses Generated by Microstructure Fibers

Kenichi Hirosawa, Hiroto Furumochi, Atsushi Tada +3 more

To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time the generation of photon number squeezing by spectral filtering for ultrabroadband light generated by microstructure fibers at 800 nm. A maximum squeezing of 4.6 dB is observed, corresponding to 10.3 dB after correcting for detection losses. We numerically analyzed the quantum dynamics of ultrashort laser pulse propagation through optical fibers by solving a nonlinear quantum Schrödinger equation that included Raman scattering, especially for the quantum correlation of photon number fluctuation among frequency modes in broadband pulses.

Control of quantum correlation among frequency modes of ultrashort pulses via optical fiber nonlinearity and pulse shaping

H. Furumochi, Kimihisa Ohno, Masataka Nakazawa +1 more

Fiber-based schemes for controlling quantum correlation between frequency bands of an ultrashort pulse to generate photon-number squeezing are studied. By employing a microstructured fiber of which zero-dispersion wavelength is 820 nm, significantly large photon-number squeezing of –4.6 dB is obtained without shaping an input pulse. Influence of spatio-temporal coupling at the pulse shaper on the control of quantum correlation is discussed.

Photon-number squeezing in a solitonlike Raman Stokes component during propagation of ultrashort pulses in a microstructure fiber

Atsushi Tada, Kenichi Hirosawa, Fumihiko Kannari +2 more

We discuss the characteristics of photon-number squeezing generated in a spectrally filtered Raman Stokes pulse obtained from a nonlinear fiber. The Raman Stokes pulse generated from a microstructure fiber with a femtosecond input laser pulse exhibits far higher photon-number squeezing. We studied the quantum correlation established among the frequency modes in the Raman Stokes pulse by using numerical calculations and experiments. To design an intra-Stokes pulse quantum correlation through the optical nonlinearities of a fiber to obtain higher photon-number squeezing, we shaped the input laser pulse by using a self-learning closed-loop control approach.

Polarization squeezing with photonic crystal fibers

J. Milanovic, J. Heersink, Christoph Marquardt +3 more

We report on the generation of polarization squeezing by employing intense, ultrashort light pulses in a single pass method in photonic crystal fibers. We investigated the squeezing behavior near the zero-dispersion wavelength and in the anomalous dispersion regime by using two distinct fibers. We observed a maximal squeezing at 810 nm of −3.3 ± 0.3 dB with an excess noise of +16.8 ± 0.3 dB in the anomalous regime. Correcting for linear and interference losses between the polarization modes, this corresponds to −6 ± 1 dB. The ratio of squeezing to excess noise indicates the creation of a much purer state; this ratio indeed lies an order of magnitude below those squeezing experiments that exploit traditional fibers [1]. We attribute this increased state of purity to increased effective nonlinearity and to the reduction of scattering on acoustic modes in the fiber.
