Observation of Quantum Noise Reduction on Twin Laser Beams

A. Heidmann, R. J. Horowicz, Serge Reynaud +3 more

We have used a two-mode optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold to generate high-intensity twin beams which exhibit quantum correlations. The noise power measured on the intensity difference between two such beams is reduced by 30% below the shot-noise limit. Noise reduction is observed over a broad range of frequencies.

Photon noise reduction by optoelectronic correction using a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator

Claude Fabre, Jerome C. Mertz, E. Giacobino +2 more

It has been recently shown theoretically1 and experimentally2 that nondegenerate optical parametric oscillators generate above threshold intense and highly correlated twin beams. More precisely, the noise on the difference between the intensities of the two beams is well below the shot noise for noise frequencies inside the cavity bandwidth. An application of this quantum correlation is to measure the intensity of one beam and use this information to correct the fluctuations of the other beam by optoelectronic means (photodiode, amplifier, and electrooptic modulator). The correction may be applied either on the pumping beam (feedback correction) or directly on the twin beam itself (feed-forward correction).

Experimental investigation of amplitude and phase quantum correlations in a type II optical parametric oscillator above threshold: from nondegenerate to degenerate operation

Julien Laurat, Laurent Longchambon, Claude Fabre +1 more

We describe a stable type II optical parametric oscillator operated above threshold that provides 9.7 +/- 0.5 dB (89%) of quantum noise reduction on the intensity difference of the signal and idler modes. We also report the first experimental study, to our knowledge, by homodyne detection of the generated bright two-mode state in the case of frequency-degenerate operation obtained by the introduction of a birefringent plate inside an optical cavity.

Generation of twin beams from an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a frequency-doubled diode laser

Kazuhiro Hayasaka, Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai

Quantum-correlated twin beams were generated from a triply resonant optical parametric oscillator with an a-cut KTP crystal pumped by a frequency-doubled diode laser. A total output of 5.1 mW was obtained in the classical-nonclassical light-conversion system driven by a 50-mW diode laser at 1080 nm. A quantum-noise reduction of 4.3 dB (63%) in the intensity difference between the twin beams was successfully observed at the detection frequency of 3 MHz.

Summary form only given. Continuous-wave twin beams, generated in cw optical parametric oscillators (OPO), show intensity difference quantum noise reduction. So far the reported measurements concern OPO operating with pump powers close to the threshold (P/P/sub th/13.
