Abstract

By numerically simulating the exact master equation for the degenerate vee-type three-level systems, we demonstrate the existence of states with drastically reduced decoherence in an open quantum systems which does not admit decoherence free subspaces.

Dynamically stabilized decoherence-free states in non-Markovian open fermionic systems

Heng-Na Xiong, Wei-Min Zhang, Matisse Wei-Yuan Tu +1 more

Decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) provide a strategy for protecting the dynamics of an open system from decoherence induced by the system-environment interaction. So far, DFSs have been primarily studied in the framework of Markovian master equations. In this work, we study decoherence-free (DF) states in the general setting of a non-Markovian fermionic environment. We identify the DF states by diagonalizing the nonunitary evolution operator for a two-level fermionic system attached to an electron reservoir. By solving the exact master equation, we show that DF states can be stabilized dynamically.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Qubit Systems: Quantum-State Diffusion Equations Versus Master Equations

Yusui Chen, Ting Yu

In this review we discuss recent progress in the theory of open quantum systems based on non-MarkovianNon-Markovian quantum state diffusionQuantum state diffusion equation and master equationsMaster equation. In particular, we show that an exact master equation for an open quantum system consisting of a few qubits can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation. The exact master equation arises naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit systems collectively interacting with a colored noise. We illustrate our general theoretical formalism by the explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This exact qubit master equation accurately characterizes the time evolution of the qubit system in various parameter domains, and paves the way for investigation of the memory effect of an open quantum system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.

Criteria for dynamically stable decoherence-free subspaces and incoherently generated coherences

Raisa I. Karasik, Karl-Peter Marzlin, Barry C. Sanders +1 more

We present a detailed analysis of decoherence free subspaces and develop a rigorous theory that provides necessary and sufficient conditions for dynamically stable decoherence free subspaces. This allows us to identify a special class of decoherence free states which rely on incoherent generation of coherences. We provide examples of physical systems that support such states. Our approach employs Markovian master equations and applies primarily to finite-dimensional quantum systems.

Adiabatic evolution of decoherence-free subspaces and its shortcuts

S. L. Wu, X. L. Huang, H. Li +1 more

The adiabatic theorem and shortcuts to adiabaticity for time-dependent open quantum systems are explored in this paper. Starting from the definition of dynamical stable decoherence-free subspace, we show that, under a compact adiabatic condition, the quantum state remains in the time-dependent decoherence-free subspace with an extremely high purity, even though the dynamics of the open quantum system may not be adiabatic. The adiabatic condition mentioned here in the adiabatic theorem for open systems is very similar to that for closed quantum systems, except that the operators required to change slowly are the Lindblad operators. We also show that the adiabatic evolution of decoherence-free subspaces depends on the existence of instantaneous decoherence-free subspaces, which requires that the Hamiltonian of open quantum systems be engineered according to the incoherent control protocol. In addition, shortcuts to adiabaticity for adiabatic decoherence-free subspaces are also presented based on the transitionless quantum driving method. Finally, we provide an example that consists of a two-level system coupled to a broadband squeezed vacuum field to show our theory. Our approach employs Markovian master equations and the theory can apply to finite-dimensional quantum open systems.

On the Complexity of Finding Decoherence Free Subspaces

Evan Borras

Decoherence free subspaces are a steady-state structure of the open quantum system which preserves quantum coherence between the states lying with in it and thus has found a variety of applications throughout quantum information science and technology. In this paper we study the computational complexity of deciding whether an open quantum system admits a decoherence free subspace or not. More specifically we study this problem with in the context of Markovian open quantum systems, governed by the time-independent Lindblad master equation. Along the way we introduce the $k$-Local Lindbladian problem, which captures the difficulty of computing purity decay rates under Lindbladian dynamics. We show that both problems are hard for the complexity class Quantum Merlin Arthur (QMA) when the locality $k \geq 5$, with the first under perfect completeness and the second being complete for QMA. Our hardness construction generalizes Kitaev's clock Hamiltonian construction to the open quantum system setting by encoding the execution of a quantum circuit into the steady subspace of a Lindbladian containing both pure and mixed history states. This subspace is then mixed depending on the output of the encoded circuit. Our results suggest that deciding whether a generic Markovian open quantum system admits a decoherence free subspace is intractable even for quantum computation.

Driving quantum systems into decoherence-free subspaces by Lyapunov control

X. X. Yi, X. L. Huang, Chunfeng Wu +1 more

We present a scheme to drive a finite-dimensional quantum system into the decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) by Lyapunov control. Control fields are established by Lyapunov function. This proposal works well for both closed and open quantum systems, with replacing the DFS by desired subspaces for closed systems. An example which consists of a four-level system with three degenerate states driven by three lasers is presented to gain further insight on the scheme. Numerical simulations for the dynamics of the system are performed and the results are good.
