Abstract

Decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) provide a strategy for protecting the dynamics of an open system from decoherence induced by the system-environment interaction. So far, DFSs have been primarily studied in the framework of Markovian master equations. In this work, we study decoherence-free (DF) states in the general setting of a non-Markovian fermionic environment. We identify the DF states by diagonalizing the nonunitary evolution operator for a two-level fermionic system attached to an electron reservoir. By solving the exact master equation, we show that DF states can be stabilized dynamically.

Robustness of decoherence-free subspaces for quantum computation

Dave Bacon, Daniel A. Lidar, K. Birgitta Whaley

It was shown recently [D. A. Lidar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2594 (1998)] that within the framework of the semigroup Markovian master equation, decoherence-free (DF) subspaces exist which are stable to first order in time to a perturbation. Here this result is extended to the non-Markovian regime and generalized. In particular, it is shown that within both the semigroup and the non-Markovian operator sum representation, DF subspaces are stable to all orders in time to a symmetry-breaking perturbation. DF subspaces are thus ideal for quantum memory applications. For quantum computation, however, the stability result does not extend beyond the first order. Thus, to perform robust quantum computation in DF subspaces, they must be supplemented with quantum error correcting codes.

Decoherence-free quantum information in the presence of dynamical evolution

Peter G. Brooke, James D. Cresser, Manas K. Patra

We analyze decoherence-free (DF) quantum information in the presence of an arbitrary non-nearest-neighbor bath-induced system Hamiltonian using a Markovian master equation. We show that the most appropriate encoding for $N$ qubits is probably contained within the $\ensuremath{\sim}\frac{2}{9}N$ excitation subspace. We give a time scale over which one would expect to apply other methods to correct for the system Hamiltonian. In order to remain applicable to experiment, we then focus on small systems, and present examples of DF quantum information for three and four qubits. We give an encoding for four qubits that, while quantum information remains in the two-excitation subspace, protects against an arbitrary bath-induced system Hamiltonian. Although our results are general to any system of qubits that satisfies our assumptions, throughout the paper we use dipole-coupled qubits as an example physical system.

Criteria for dynamically stable decoherence-free subspaces and incoherently generated coherences

Raisa I. Karasik, Karl-Peter Marzlin, Barry C. Sanders +1 more

We present a detailed analysis of decoherence free subspaces and develop a rigorous theory that provides necessary and sufficient conditions for dynamically stable decoherence free subspaces. This allows us to identify a special class of decoherence free states which rely on incoherent generation of coherences. We provide examples of physical systems that support such states. Our approach employs Markovian master equations and applies primarily to finite-dimensional quantum systems.

Non-Markovian decoherence dynamics in nonequilibrium environments

Xiang-Ji Cai, Yujun Zheng

We theoretically investigate the non-Markovian dynamical decoherence of a quantum system coupled to nonequilibrium environments with nonstationary statistical properties. We show the time evolution of the decoherence factor in real-imaginary space to study the environment-induced energy renormalization and backaction of coherence which are associated with the unitary and nonunitary parts of the quantum master equation, respectively. It is also shown that the nonequilibrium decoherence dynamics displays a transition between Markovian and non-Markovian and the transition boundary depends on the environmental parameters. The results are helpful for further understanding non-Markovian dynamics and coherence backaction on an open quantum system from environments.

Non-Markovian effects in electronic and spin transport

Pedro Ribeiro, Vitor Rocha Vieira

We derive a non-Markovian master equation for the evolution of a class of open quantum systems consisting of quadratic fermionic systems coupled to wideband reservoirs. This is done by providing an explicit correspondence between master equations and nonequilibrium Green's function approaches. Our findings permit us to address non-Markovian regimes characterized by negative decoherence rates and to characterize the dynamics with respect to a recently proposed measurement of ``non-Markovianity.'' We study the real-time dynamics and the steady-state solution of two illustrative models: a tight-binding electronic model and $\mathit{XY}$ spin chains. The rich set of nonequilibrium steady-state phases encountered extends previous results to the non-Markovian regime.
