Confined coherence and analytic properties of Green’s functions

Kurt Schönhammer

A simple model of noninteracting electrons with a separable one-body potential is used to discuss the possible pole structure of single-particle Green's functions for fermions on unphysical sheets in the complex frequency plane as a function of the system parameters. The poles in the exact Green's function can cross the imaginary axis, in contrast to recent claims that such a behavior is unphysical. As the Green's function of the model has the same functional form as an approximate Green's function for coupled Luttinger liquids, no definite conclusions concerning the concept of ``confined coherence'' can be drawn from the locations of the poles of this Green's function.

Combining Density Functional Theory and Green’s Function Theory: Range-Separated, Nonlocal, Dynamic, and Orbital-Dependent Hybrid Functional

Alexei A. Kananenka, Dominika Zgid

We present a rigorous framework which combines single-particle Green's function theory with density functional theory based on a separation of electron-electron interactions into short- and long-range components. Short-range contribution to the total energy and exchange-correlation potential is provided by a density functional approximation, while the long-range contribution is calculated using an explicit many-body Green's function method. Such a hybrid results in a nonlocal, dynamic, and orbital-dependent exchange-correlation functional of a single-particle Green's function. In particular, we present a range-separated hybrid functional called srSVWN5-lrGF2 which combines the local-density approximation and the second-order Green's function theory. We illustrate that similarly to density functional approximations, the new functional is weakly basis-set dependent. Furthermore, it offers an improved description of the short-range dynamic correlation. The many-body contribution to the functional mitigates the many-electron self-interaction error present in many density functional approximations and provides a better description of molecular properties. Additionally, we illustrate that the new functional can be used to scale down the self-energy and, therefore, introduce an additional sparsity to the self-energy matrix that in the future can be exploited in calculations for large molecules or periodic systems.

Nonequilibrium superoperator GW equations

Upendra Harbola, Shaul Mukamel

Hedin's equations [Phys. Rev. 139, 796 (1965)] for the one-particle equilibrium Green's function of a many-electron system are generalized to nonequilibrium open systems using two fields that separately control the evolution of the bra and the ket of the density matrix. A closed hierarchy is derived for the Green's function, the self-energy, the screened potential, the polarization, and the vertex function, all expressed as Keldysh matrices in Liouville space.
