Quasiparticle and vortex in the anyon gas

Abstract

We calculate a vortex current for some trial wave functions of an excited state of the anyon gas to show the identity of a quasiparticle with a vortex. We also give the energy of an excited state starting from the microscopic Hamiltonian and show that it is essentially the same as that of the vortex state of ordinary two-dimensional superfluids. A comment on anyons of intermediate statistics is given.

Superconductivity in the two-component anyon gas at finite temperature

Jian Zhou, S. G. Chen

We show that the elementary excitation of the superconductive s-wave ground state in the two-component anyon gas is always accompanied by an angular-momentum-free, flux-free vortex. Finite-temperature superconductivity in the two-component anyon gas is similar to the two-dimension superfluid. There are two Thouless-Kosterlitz (TK) phase transitions.

Vortex patterns in the almost-bosonic anyon gas

Michele Correggi, Romain Duboscq, Douglas Lundholm +1 more

We study theoretically and numerically the ground state of a gas of 2D Abelian anyons in an external trapping potential. We treat anyon statistics in the magnetic gauge picture, perturbatively around the bosonic end. This leads to a mean-field energy functional, whose ground state displays vortex lattices similar to those found in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. A crucial difference is, however, that the vortex density is proportional to the underlying matter density of the gas.

From microscopic theory to Boltzmann kinetic equation: Application to vortex dynamics

G. Blatter, V. B. Geshkenbeǐn, Nikolai B. Kopnin

We show how to lift the problem of calculating the force acting on a topological defect in a superfluid from the microscopic to the semiclassical level: Starting from the microscopic kinetic equations for a clean superconductor, we derive a Boltzmann equation for the quasiparticle distribution function in and around the defect. The velocity $\mathrm{q\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}}$ and force $\mathrm{p\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}}$ appearing in this Boltzmann equation are given through the Hamiltonian equations $\mathrm{q\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}}={\ensuremath{\partial}}_{p}{E}_{n}(p,q)$ and $\mathrm{p\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}}=\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\partial}}_{q}{E}_{n}(p,q),$ where ${E}_{n}(p,q)$ denotes the $(n\mathrm{th}$ branch in the) spectrum of the quasiparticles in the vicinity of the defect. Second, we reformulate the microscopic expression for the force acting on the defect in terms of the total momentum transfer of the quasiparticles from the heat bath to the vortex core. We illustrate our result with an application to vortices in s-wave superconductors, where we derive the vortex equation of motion and identify the Magnus, Hall, and dissipative forces.

Single-particle excitation spectrum of the anyon gas

Alexander L. Fetter, Charles B. Hanna

The single-particle energy spectrum of the anyon gas is calculated in the Hartree-Fock approximation, for all fractional statistics corresponding to a ground state with an integral number of filled Landau levels. We also compute the first-order shift in the ground-state energy as a function of the statistics.

Vortex mass in a superfluid

Tapio Simula

We consider the inertial mass of a vortex in a superfluid. We obtain a vortex mass that is well defined and is determined microscopically and self-consistently by the elementary excitation energy of the kelvon quasiparticle localized within the vortex core. The obtained result for the vortex mass is found to be consistent with experimental observations on superfluid quantum gases and vortex rings in water. We propose a method to measure the inertial rest mass and Berry phase of a vortex in superfluid Bose and Fermi gases.
