Vortex-Ring Interactions in Superfluid Liquid Helium

Abstract

We have observed interactions between collimated monoenergetic beams of charged vortex rings. The cross section for ring-ring interaction is approximately geometrical, consistent with a hydrodynamic interpretation. Capture of free ions by oppositely charged rings has also been observed.

Interaction of Charged Vortex Rings with a Superfluid Helium Surface

Charlene Hosticka, B. E. Springett

Electrons carried by vortex rings toward a free surface in liquid ${\mathrm{He}}^{4}$ are found to evaporate from the surface with an energy independent of the ring energy. The energy of the electron is found to depend upon the amount of charge stored near the surface. We find also that the percentage of the ring current which crosses the surface depends on temperature, ring energy, and conditions at the surface. Finally, we hypothesize a trapped state near the surface and analyze our results in terms of the lifetime of this state.

Evolution of a Pulse of Charged Vortex Rings in Superfluid Helium

George Gamota, Akira Hasegawa, C. M. Varma

Experiments with a pulsed beam of charged, quantized vortex rings show that it evolves into a steady-state distribution. This behavior is shown to follow from the Coulomb interaction among the vortices and a negative effective pressure arising from the vortex dispersion law.

Atoms in contact (8) : Blowing smoke rings in superfluid helium.

P. V. E. McClintock

Strange effects in the behaviour of superfluids are the province of two British physicists who have been dragging charged atoms and electrons (ions) through superfluid helium. In this first of two articles they describe the formation of trapped vortex rings of helium swirling about the moving ion.

Charged-Vortex-Ring Creation by Ions in Superfluid Helium

S. Cunsolo, B. Maraviglia

The critical-threshold electric fields and the critical velocities for the formation of charged vortex rings have been measured at temperatures $0.35<T<1\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$K. Below $T=0.85\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$K, two different thresholds are shown to exist, connected with two different processes of formation. These two processes are found to be detectable only when a stability condition is satisfied.

Interaction of Quantized Vortex Rings with Quantized Vortex Lines in Rotating He II

Klaus W. Schwarz

The effect of steady rotation on a beam of charged vortex rings in He II has been investigated. The rotation-dependent changes in the beam are interpreted in terms of strong ring-line interactions experienced by a fraction of the rings, plus collective effects which are the same for all rings. An approximate calculation based on inviscid hydrodynamics and a uniform distribution of vortex lines yields fair agreement with the observed behavior.
