Numerical study of Rydberg Cs atoms in parallel electric and magnetic fields

Abstract

Using a potential model method, we calculate the Stark evolution of the diamagnetic manifolds of Rydberg caesium. Results show that general features appearing in hydrogen lithium and helium are found in caesium. But significant modifications characteristic of atomic species and magnetic field strength are also evident and are attributed to core effects. We also find numerical manifestations of the fine structure effect of Rydberg states in strong external fields which have been long neglected.

Rydberg atoms in parallel magnetic and electric fields. I. Experimental studies of the odd diamagnetic multiplet of lithium: n mixing and core effects

Patrice Cacciani, Sylvain Liberman, Eliane Luc-Koenig +2 more

A quasihydrogenic complete diamagnetic manifold is investigated experimentally. The spectra are obtained in a uniform magnetic field by exciting in a one-step process, using polarised laser light, the lithium atoms of an atomic beam. The whole structure of the M=0 odd diamagnetic multiplet has been recorded for the first time. This experiment provides a confirmation for the existence of the two classes of states predicted for the diamagnetic Hamiltonian of atomic hydrogen in the weak-field limit. The fundamental features of diamagnetism still subsist for such high field strengths so that the diamagnetic interaction cannot be regarded as a perturbation with respect to the Coulomb problem. The intermanifold coupling and the influence of effects due to the ionic core in the lithium atom are evaluated quantitatively.

Rydberg atoms in parallel magnetic and electric fields. II. Theoretical analysis of the Stark structure of the diamagnetic manifold of hydrogen

Patrice Cacciani, Eliane Luc-Koenig, Jacques Pinard +2 more

For pt. I see ibid., vol.21, no.21, p.3473-98 (1988). The semiclassical approach based on the secular perturbation method, primarily introduced by Solov'ev (1982) to study the pure diamagnetism of hydrogen in the weak-field limit, is extended to the case where the atom is subjected to electric and magnetic fields both parallel to the 0z direction. The structure of the manifold of states with principal quantum number n is governed by the existence of an approximate constant of motion and the states can be classified into three groups. The semiclassical Bohr-Sommerfeld quantisation rule allows the energy of the states to be calculated. The main properties of the spectra and their evolution when one of the fields increases are analysed. An original comparison between the structure of the pure diamagnetic n multiplet with azimuthal quantum number M not=0 and the structure of the n, M=0 multiplet with parallel fields is proposed.

Helium Rydberg states in parallel electric and magnetic fields

Tony van der Veldt, W. Vassen, W. Hogervorst

The n=60, L z =0 angular momentum manifold in helium is studied in the presence of an electric field parallel to a fixed magnetic field (B=0.1539 T). Results obtained from a CW laser-atomic beam experiment are compared with diagonalization calculations and with a WKB approximation including core effects. Core-induced anticrossings have been analysed in detail. The supersymmetry, including quasi-crossings in hydrogen to occur at the same value of the electric field strength, does not apply for L z =0 manifolds in non-hydrogenic Rydberg atoms.

Fine structure in a strong magnetic field: Paschen-Back effect reconsidered in Rydberg atoms

Wenyu Liu, Sihong Gu, Baiwen Li

Using a kind of potential model wave function for alkali metal atoms, we nonperturbatively study the effect of fine structure on the Rydberg spectra of Cs atom in a strong magnetic field. Our numerical results reveal spectral structure dramatically different from the well-established Paschen-Back effect, and we argue that the fine structure of the Rydberg Cs atom cannot be neglected even in a magnetic field as strong as several teslas. We also give an error estimate of our results and a word on possible experimental verification. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

The potential model investigation of Stark effect in caesium Rydberg state atoms and comparison with experiment

Zhengfa Hu, Zhao Hong-tai, Zhou Shi-Kang +2 more

The potential model method for computation of Stark structure of Cs Rydberg states atoms and oscillator strength is described, for external electric fields varying from 0 to 600V/cm. Anticrossing, l -mixing and n -mixing phenomena are observed clearly from the map of Stark. Corresponding experiment is performed under the same condition, and the two results are in good agreement with each other within the experimental uncertainty.

Rydberg states of helium in electric and magnetic fields of arbitrary relative orientation

Ondřej Tkáč, Matija Žeško, Josef A. Agner +2 more

A spectroscopic study of Rydberg states of helium (n = 30 and 45) in magnetic, electric and combined magnetic and electric fields with arbitrary relative orientations of the field vectors is presented. The emphasis is on two special cases where (i) the diamagnetic term is negligible and both paramagnetic Zeeman and Stark effects are linear (n = 30, B ≤ 120 mT and F = 0-78 V cm⁻¹), and (ii) the diamagnetic term is dominant and the Stark effect is linear (n = 45, B = 277 mT and F = 0-8 V cm⁻¹). Both cases correspond to regimes where the interactions induced by the electric and magnetic fields are much weaker than the Coulomb interaction, but much stronger than the spin-orbit interaction. The experimental spectra are compared to spectra calculated by determining the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian matrix describing helium Rydberg states in the external fields. The spectra and the calculated energy-level diagrams in external fields reveal avoided crossings between levels of different m ₗ values and pronounced m ₁-mixing effects at all angles between the electric- and magnetic-field vectors other than 0. These observations are discussed in the context of the development of a method to generate dense samples of cold atoms and molecules in a magnetic trap following Rydberg-Stark deceleration.
