Relativistic Quantum Mechanics through Frame-Dependent Constructions

Jeffrey Alan Barrett

This paper is concerned with the possibility and nature of relativistic hidden-variable formulations of quantum mechanics. Both ad hoc teleological constructions and frame-dependent constructions of spacetime maps are considered. While frame-dependent constructions are clearly preferable, a many-maps theory based on such constructions fails to provide dynamical explanations for local quantum events. Here the hidden-variable dynamics used in the frame-dependent constructions is just a rule that serves to characterize the set of all possible spacetime maps. While not having dynamical explanations of the values of quantum-mechanical measurement records is a significant cost, it may prove too much to ask for dynamical explanations in relativistic quantum mechanics.

QUATERNIONIC QUANTUM MECHANICS AND RESTRICTED RELATIVITY. PART 22

Gérard G. Emch

S>The implications of group theory for the foundations of quaternionic quantum mechanics are discussed. It is proved that even in this case a relativistic description is possible. It is shown that the elementary systems for the Poincare group, as they appear in this realization, are in one-to-one correspondence with those of the usual complex quantum mechanics. The occurrence of charge conjugation related to space reflexion is discussed and some consequences on a TCP-relativistic theory are explored. The framework of a general relativistic quaternionic quantum mechanics is developed and the particular ties that exist between this theory and its complex analog are emphasized. The possible adequacy of a mixed complex-quaternionic description for isospin is discussed. (auth)

No Place for Particles in Relativistic Quantum Theories?

Hans Halvorson, Rob Clifton

Several recent arguments purport to show that there can be no relativistic, quantum-mechanical theory of localizable particles and, thus, that relativity and quantum mechanics can be reconciled only in the context of quantum field theory. We point out some loopholes in the existing arguments, and we provide two no-go theorems to close these loopholes. However, even with these loopholes closed, it does not yet follow that relativity plus quantum mechanics exclusively requires a field ontology, since relativistic quantum field theory itself might permit an ontology of localizable particles supervenient on the fundamental fields. Thus, we provide another no-go theorem to rule out this possibility. Finally, we allay potential worries about this conclusion by arguing that relativistic quantum field theory can nevertheless explain the possibility of "particle detections," as well as the pragmatic utility of "particle talk."
