Abstract

The dynamics of hydrogen atom in the presence of a strong radiation field of the titanium-sapphire laser is studied for the Keldysh parameters γ ≥ 1 and γ ≤ 1. It is demonstrated that the ionization is supplemented with the effective population of the excited states with the principal quantum numbers n = 5–10 in the entire range of variation in the Keldysh parameter. The population of the excited Rydberg states can be interpreted as a consequence of the multiphoton resonance involving the initial 1 s state and a group of excited states in the vicinity of the continuum boundary with the simultaneous repopulation of these states by Λ-type Raman transitions under the action of the laser field. The resulting coherent Rydberg packet appears to be stable with respect to ionization, so that the ionization of the atomic system in the presence of strong electromagnetic field is suppressed. Physical reasons for the stabilization are discussed. An interpretation of the effective population of the Rydberg states in the recent experiments on the ionization of atomic helium by the titanium-sapphire laser is proposed.

Resonant multiphoton ionization of the 1s state of a hydrogen atom in a strong laser field

Ekaterina A. Volkova, A. M. Popov, Olga V. Tikhonova

The process of resonant multiphoton ionization of a hydrogen atom in the ground 1 s state is studied by direct numerical integration of the nonstationary Schrödinger equation for a quantum system in an electromagnetic field. The dependence of photoionization probability on the radiation intensity is found to be nonmonotonic. It is established that the minima of ionization correspond to multiphoton resonances between the ground state and one of the excited (Rydberg) atomic states perturbed by the laser field. It is shown that ionization is suppressed due to rearrangement of Rydberg states in a strong electromagnetic field and is accompanied by efficient Raman Λ transitions, which connect a set of closely lying Rydberg states via the continuum.

The intensity dependence of Rydberg state excitation in the strong field ionization of hydrogen atoms by two-color laser fields

Shijia Liu, Zhaoyan Zhou

To study the physical mechanism of atomic Rydberg state excitation (RSE) in two-color laser fields, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) to calculate the ionization and excitation of hydrogen atoms. The relationship between the excited state population and the excitation rate of hydrogen atoms and the intensity of the fundamental frequency (FW) field can be observed by adjusting the laser intensity of the second harmonic (SH) field. The results demonstrate that multiphoton resonance absorption aligns with the physical mechanism of atomic resonant state excitation in two-color laser fields.

Population trapping of excited atoms in strong chirped laser pulses

A. M. Popov, Olga V. Tikhonova, Ekaterina A. Volkova

The population trapping in highly excited atomic states under intense femtosecond Ti:sapphire transform limited and chirped laser pulse action is studied. It is demonstrated that trapping appears as a result of the multiphoton resonance between the initial ground state and a set of excited states near the continuum boundary accompanied by repopulation of the Rydberg states by the Raman Λ-type transitions via the continuum and the interference stabilization. The specific features of the population trapping in both positively and negatively chirped pulses are analyzed and discussed.

Coherence and interference in a Rydberg atom in a strong laser field: excitation, ionization, and emission of light

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Misha Ivanov

Excitation and photoionization of Rydberg wave packets are described. Interference of bound-free transitions from many coherently populated Rydberg levels is shown to affect the dependence of the photoionization probability on the duration of interaction. Strong-field interference effects in such a system are described also. The most important of these is the field-induced interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong ionizing field. The intensity range in which this effect can exist is determined. The results derived are used for a qualitative model describing supercontinuum emission in the process of multiphoton ionization.

Stabilization against ionization via high-Rydberg states

Antoni Wójcik, R. Parzyn-acuteski, Andrzej Grudka

An analytical study is presented of two models of intense-laser ionization from an isolated initial state via a band of high-Rydberg states in a system which bears many features of the hydrogen atom. The models differ in the way the population from the directly excited Rydberg states can migrate to the states of higher angular momenta. In one of them it migrates via nonresonant and in the other via resonant degenerate Raman coupling. Within these models we draw conclusions about the efficiency of migration, the initial-state lifetime, the redistribution of population, the laser intensities stabilizing the atom against ionization, the effect of the initial state on the threshold stabilizing intensity, as well as about stabilizing mechanisms versus the initial-state choice.

Interference suppression of photoionization of Rydberg atoms in a strong electromagnetic field

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, A. M. Movsesian

Photoionization of highly excited atoms by a strong microwave field is considered. Secondary coherent population of some neighboring Rydberg levels in the process of ionization is shown to be a reason for interference of transitions from these levels to the continuum. Interference is shown to be a reason for some new effects: stabilization of the atom, suppression of its ionization, appearance of a multipeak structure in the photoelectron spectrum, field-induced narrowing of its peaks, narrowing and localization of quasi-energy atomic spectrum in a strong field, etc.
