Abstract

The mathematical theory of control of the quantum systems relies on some ideas of the optimal control theory. They were analyzed and developed with regard to the specifics of such systems. The field of application of the control design algorithms was expanded, their efficiency and speed were increased.

The quantum systems control and the optimal control theory

V. F. Krotov

Mathematical theory of the quantum systems control is based on some ideas of the optimal control theory. These ideas are developed here as applied to these systems. The results obtained meet the deficiencies in the basis and algorithms of the control synthesis and expand the application of these methods.

Introduction to the Foundations of Quantum Optimal Control

Ugo Boscain, Mario Sigalotti, Dominique Sugny

Optimal Control Theory is a powerful mathematical tool, which has known a rapid development since the 1950s, mainly for engineering applications. More recently, it has become a widely used method to improve process performance in quantum technologies by means of highly efficient control of quantum dynamics. This review aims at providing an introduction to key concepts of optimal control theory which is accessible to physicists and engineers working in quantum control or in related fields. The different mathematical results are introduced intuitively, before being rigorously stated. This review describes modern aspects of optimal control theory, with a particular focus on the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, which is the main tool for determining open-loop control laws without experimental feedback. The different steps to solve an optimal control problem are discussed, before moving on to more advanced topics such as the existence of optimal solutions or the definition of the different types of extremals, namely normal, abnormal, and singular. The review covers various quantum control issues and describes their mathematical formulation suitable for optimal control. The optimal solution of different low-dimensional quantum systems is presented in detail, illustrating how the mathematical tools are applied in a practical way.

Optimal control of quantum system under bilinear systems

Qixing Zheng

By means of the achievement of bilinear systems theory research in the macroscopic fields, associated with the characteristic that the mathematical model of quantum mechanical system is bilinear, an iterative optimal controller for a quantum mechanical system is designed through the derivation of the optimal controller with two points boundary values problem. Also by the simulation experiment of states transfer control of the designed quantum system, the effects to control results with different control parameters are detailly analyzed.

State manipulation in Lyapunov-based quantum system control methods

Shuang Cong

We investigate in depth the Lyapunov-based quantum control methods including the relation between the Lyapunov-based control and the optimal control, the Lyapunov function and the performance index, the range of application and the existing problems.Combining our results with intrinsic properties of quantum system,we develop several control schemes with improvements for different objectives such as the regulation of eigenstates, superposition state or mixed state. The design ideas, the physical significance and the range of suitable applications are analyzed. The designs method employing Lyapunov stability theorem in controlling quantum system is systemized.

Optimal control of spin systems

Steffen J. Glaser, Christiane P. Koch, Niels Chr. Nielsen +2 more

Quantum optimal control has become a central tool for designing high-performance pulse sequences in magnetic resonance and quantum technologies. Early developments in NMR relied on heuristic composite and shaped pulses or analytical approaches such as average Hamiltonian theory. The introduction of modern optimal control algorithms enabled the systematic optimization of thousands of control parameters, greatly expanding the achievable performance and scope of pulse engineering. This review summarizes key developments in optimal control of spin and pseudo-spin systems and highlights major applications in magnetic resonance, in quantum technologies, and in the control of atoms and molecules.
