Separation of longitudinal and transversal space in the description of twin photons

Abstract

General expressions for the created two-photon state and the coincidence detection amplitude are derived. The description accounts for entanglement in polarization, in time and frequency, and in the transversal momentum or position amplitudes. Characteristic for spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is that the two photons are created at the same location in the crystal, at the same instant of time.

Entanglement of the transverse degrees of freedom of the photon

P. H. Souto Ribeiro, Marcelo França Santos, P. Milman

Using two parametric down-converters, it is possible to prepare twin photons in position-entangled states, where the photons are labelled by their birth position. We have measured the interference between the two probability amplitudes for a twin-photon pair: of being born in the first crystal or in the second one. The oscillation frequency of the coincidence pattern can be varied through independent phase differences in the signal and idler beams. Entangled states in position and also in the polarization sub-space can be prepared with this source. In this case, measurement of the position interference can give us information about the degree of polarization entanglement.

Energy and momentum entanglement in parametric downconversion

Pablo L. Saldanha, Carlos Henrique Monken

We present a simple treatment of the phenomenon of spontaneous parametric downconversion consisting of the coherent scattering of a single pump photon into an entangled photon pair inside a nonlinear crystal. The energy and momentum entanglement of the quantum state of the generated twin photons are seen as a consequence of the fundamental indistinguishability of the time and the position in which the photon pair is created inside the crystal. We also discuss some consequences of photon entanglement.

Spatiotemporal correlations in entangled photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion

Clara I. Osorio, Alejandra Valencia, Juan P Torres

In most configurations aimed at generating entangled photons based on spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), the generated pairs of photons are required to be entangled in only one degree of freedom. Any distinguishing information coming from the other degrees of freedom that characterize the photon should be suppressed to avoid correlations with the degree of freedom of interest. However, this suppression is not always possible. Here, we show how the frequency information available affects the purity of the two-photon state in space, revealing a correlation between the frequency and the space degrees of freedom. This correlation should be taken into account to calculate the total amount of entanglement between the photons.

Generation of four-photon hyperentangled state using spontaneous parametric down-conversion source with the second-order term

Ying-Qiu He, Ding Dong, Peng Tao +2 more

Nowadays, the generation of multiphoton entangled states is almost realized by combining the coupled entangled photons emitted from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) with the first-order term.In this case, one may focus mainly on the first-order term, and then avoid multipair emission events by restricting experimental parameters. On the other hand, for the higher-order terms in SPDC source, these emitted entangled photons have interesting features. For example, they are entangled maximally not only in photon number for the spatial modes, but also in polarization degree of freedom. In general, two photons, which are entangled in two or more degrees of freedom, are called hyperentangled pair of photons or hyperentangled state. We present a scheme to generate the four-photon hyperentangled state based on four indistinguishable photons emitted from SPDC source with the second-order term.Consider two SPDC sources with equal probability of emission of photons in respective spatial modes. With the passive linear optical devices,i.e., beam splitters, half wave plates, polarizing beam splitters, etc.,under the condition of registering a specified four-photon coincidence,we can obtain the four-photon hyperentangled state in which the photons are entangled in both polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedom. Here,of course, for an arbitrary fourfold coincidence detection, one obtains a canonical four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. Then we show the results of fourfold coincidence detections and the corresponding probabilities for the four-photon GHZ states, where the generation of the four-photon hyperentangled state is included as long as we are not to distinguish the two detectors located at the same locations. As a result, our scheme has two notable features. When we only consider the second-order emission, since it is not needed for us to distinguish between the two SPDC sources, the present scheme is simple and feasible. Also, based on the postselection with fourfold coincidence detection, our scheme is suitable for the normal first-order emission where we restrict the four photons emitted from the same source. In this sense, our scheme is efficient. In a word,we describe a method to generate the four-photon hyperentangled state with the second-order emission in SPDC source, which may contribute to the exploration of multipair entanglement with higher-order emissions from the SPDC source.

Generalized description of the spatio-temporal biphoton state in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Baghdasar Baghdasaryan, Carlos Sevilla-Gutiérrez, Fabian Steinlechner +1 more

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is a widely used source for photonic entanglement. Years of focused research have led to a solid understanding of the process, but a cohesive analytical description of the paraxial biphoton state has yet to be achieved. We derive a general expression for the spatio-temporal biphoton state that applies universally across common experimental settings and correctly describes the nonseparability of spatial and spectral modes. We formulate a criterion on how to decrease the coupling of the spatial from the spectral degree of freedom by taking into account the Gouy phase of interacting beams. This work provides new insights into the role of the Gouy phase in SPDC, and also into the preparation of engineered entangled states for multidimensional quantum information processing.
