Abstract

The dynamics of a superconducting Josephson qubit coupled to a bosonic bath has been studied by the quantum trajectory method. The excitation of the qubit by Rabi pulses has been considered. Excited state dissipative dynamics interrupted by quantum jumps has been simulated both for each single realization and for an average over the ensemble of realizations. The transition to the averaged behavior, which is characterized by the intervals of longitudinal and transverse relaxation, has been studied. The simulation results qualitatively agree with the recent single-shot measurements of qubits.

The impact of the spontaneous relaxation rate on level populations of a superconducting Josephson qubit driven by a strong RF field in single realizations of the experiment has been studied using the quantum-trajectory approach. Quantum jumps in Landau-Zener transitions in the dissipative dynamics of a superconducting qubit

A. I. Gel’man, Сатанин Аркадий Михайлович

The effect of noise on the populations of the levels of a qubit in individual experimental implementations has been studied by the quantum trajectory method. A transition to the average dynamics obtained by means of multiple measurements of the state of the qubit is analyzed. The developed method is applied to investigate the effect of noise on the interference pattern appearing in the amplitude spectroscopy of the qubit in a strong variable field owing to Landau-Zener transitions. The effect of the number of repeated measurements and the fluctuation of the phase of a pump pulse on the formation of the response of the qubit to the external field has been analyzed. This makes it possible to interpret recent experiments in terms of individual implementations and averaged dynamics.

Dissipative Bose-Josephson junction coupled to bosonic baths

Sudip Sinha, Subhasis Sinha

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to baths of bosons at its two sites. Apart from the dynamical transition due to repulsive interactions, the BJJ undergoes a quantum phase transition by increasing the coupling strength with the bath modes. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The excitation energies and fluctuation of number imbalance are obtained within a Holstein-Primakoff approximation, which exhibits vanishing of the energy gap and enhanced quantum fluctuations at the critical point. We study the dynamics of BJJ using a time-dependent variational method and analyze stability of different types of steady states. As a special case we study in detail the phase space dynamics of BJJ coupled to a single mode, which reveals diffusive and incoherent behavior with increasing coupling to the bath mode. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the π oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable when their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We study the Josephson dynamics in the presence of an Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate the thermal fluctuations and obtain the Josephson oscillation frequency and damping analytically. We also observe the transition to the symmetry-broken state for strong coupling as well as decay of π oscillation and a self-trapped state to the ground state due to dissipation. Variation of the phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behavior as observed in experiment. Finally we discuss the experimental setup to study the observable effects of dissipation in BJJ.

Quantum trajectory approach to circuit QED: Quantum jumps and the Zeno effect

Jay Gambetta, Alexandre Blais, Maxime Boissonneault +3 more

We present a theoretical study of a superconducting charge qubit dispersively coupled to a transmission line resonator. Starting from a master equation description of this coupled system and using a polaron transformation, we obtain an exact effective master equation for the qubit. We then use quantum trajectory theory to investigate the measurement of the qubit by continuous homodyne measurement of the resonator out field. Using the same polaron transformation, a stochastic master equation for the conditional state of the qubit is obtained. From this result, various definitions of the measurement time are studied. Furthermore, we find that in the limit of strong homodyne measurement, typical quantum trajectories for the qubit exhibit a crossover from diffusive to jumplike behavior. Finally, in the presence of Rabi drive on the qubit, the qubit dynamics is shown to exhibit quantum Zeno behavior.

Dark periods in Rabi oscillations of a superconducting phase qubit coupled to a microscopic two-level system

Xueda Wen, Shi-Liang Zhu, Yang Yu

We propose a scheme to demonstrate macroscopic quantum jumps in a superconducting phase qubit coupled to a microscopic two-level system in the Josephson tunnel junction. Irradiated with suitable microwaves, the Rabi oscillations of the qubit exhibit signatures of quantum jumps: a random telegraph signal with long intervals of intense macroscopic quantum tunneling events (bright periods) interrupted by the complete absence of tunneling events (dark periods). An analytical model is developed to describe the width of the dark periods quantitatively. The numerical simulations indicate that our analytical model can capture underlying physics of the system. Besides calibrating the quality of the microscopic two-level system, our results have significance in quantum information process since dark periods in Rabi oscillations are also responsible for errors in quantum computing with superconducting qubits.

Generalized Spin-Boson model and its application to dissipative Bose-Josephson Junction
