Quantum Computing and IS - Harnessing the Opportunities of Emerging Technologies

Wallace Chipidza, Yan Li, Atefeh Mashatan +2 more

Emerging technologies have a high potential for impact and are worthy of attention by the Information Systems (IS) community. To date, the IS discipline has not been able to be a leader in the research and teaching of emerging technologies in their early stages arguably because: (1) IS researchers often lack knowledge of the foundational principles of such emerging technologies, and (2) during the emerging phase, there is insufficient data on the adoption, use, and impact of these technologies. To overcome these challenges, the IS discipline must be willing to break its own disciplinary research boundaries to go beyond software applications and their related management issues and start studying emerging technologies before they are massively adopted by industry. In this paper, we use quantum computing as an exemplar emerging technology and outline a research and education agenda that will help IS harness the opportunities quantum computing offers. We propose that IS researchers rigorously investigate emergent technologies through collaboration with researchers from other disciplines. We also see a role for IS researchers in the scholarship of emerging technologies and in the process of introducing emerging technologies into IS curricula.

The technological emergence of quantum communication: A bibliometric analysis

Xiaoyu Liu, Yuwei Huang, Yalong Yan +2 more

Quantum communication is a key to information security, which has a wide range of applications in military, financial, and social development. Understanding the technological emergence in advance would contribute to gain full socio-economic benefits and reducing risk. This research attempts to explore the emergence of quantum communication from the bibliometric perspective. By analyzing the patent from the Derwent Innovation Index, this research analyzes the development phase, the technology emergence, the main contributors’ network, the distribution of regions, and technology categories of quantum communication. The results show that quantum communication is in the growth phase according to the theory of the technology life cycle. China, the United States, and Japan are the leading countries. This research also identifies the main patent assignees and their collaboration networks. By introducing the technological emergence indicators, this research identifies four emerging topics in quantum communication and analyzes the layout of main patent assignees within these topics. This research would contribute to the endeavour of scientific communities toward the development of quantum communication.

The Identification of Emerging Quantum Technologies in the Healthcare Sector: A Horizon Scanning Study

Oshin Sharma, Ross Fairbairn, Imogen Forsythe +2 more

ABSTRACT Quantum technologies, driven by principles of quantum mechanics like superposition and entanglement, have shown transformative potential in drug discovery, medical diagnosis, precision medicine, and other therapeutic interventions. However, the research on emerging quantum technologies at early to late stages of development for healthcare applications is limited. The main objective of this study was to identify emerging quantum technologies such as quantum computing, diagnostics, and therapeutics, with a focus on specific applications within healthcare, such as drug discovery, diagnosis assistance, precision medicine, and treatment interventions. We conducted a comprehensive review of this landscape by analyzing data from clinical trials, published literature, and soft intelligence sources. The analysis revealed 116 quantum technologies such as computing algorithms, therapeutics, sensors, and imaging applications that are currently in development or already in the market. Diagnosis assistance‐related technologies, including technologies such as magnetoencephalography and quantum dots, constituted the majority of the technologies, while quantum computing‐related machine learning and algorithms were significant in drug discovery and precision medicine applications. The integration of quantum technologies into healthcare faces challenges such as infrastructure demands, regulatory frameworks, and the need for professional training. However, with ongoing advancements, quantum technologies are uniquely positioned to revolutionize diagnostic accuracy, computational capacity for drug design, and precision medicine. This horizon scan highlights the current innovation landscape of emerging quantum technologies in healthcare and the challenges in facilitating the integration of these technologies into healthcare systems.
