Abstract

Quantum communication is a key to information security, which has a wide range of applications in military, financial, and social development. Understanding the technological emergence in advance would contribute to gain full socio-economic benefits and reducing risk. This research attempts to explore the emergence of quantum communication from the bibliometric perspective. By analyzing the patent from the Derwent Innovation Index, this research analyzes the development phase, the technology emergence, the main contributors’ network, the distribution of regions, and technology categories of quantum communication. The results show that quantum communication is in the growth phase according to the theory of the technology life cycle. China, the United States, and Japan are the leading countries. This research also identifies the main patent assignees and their collaboration networks. By introducing the technological emergence indicators, this research identifies four emerging topics in quantum communication and analyzes the layout of main patent assignees within these topics. This research would contribute to the endeavour of scientific communities toward the development of quantum communication.

A bibliometric analysis of quantum computing literature: mapping and evidences from scopus

Jiaxing Wang, Lihua Shen, Wuyuan Zhou

Quantum computing is the next-generation technology for future human society. This article aims to give a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the global development status of quantum computing. First, the latest research hotspots of quantum computing are reviewed. Then multiple bibliometric metrics were used to analyse the current development status, research hotspots, technological trends, and the contribution of authors, institutions, and countries in quantum computing from 2016 to 2020. The results confirm that quantum computing is still under development, with the United States and China in the leading position, from where most critical scholars came. The most important institutions are scattered in the United States, China, and France. The characteristics of international cooperation, research impact, topics with the highest Prominence percentile, distinctive keyphrases, and leading source journals within the field were also analysed. The results may provide a quantitative basis for scientific research and decision-making in quantum computing.

On Quantum Transition in Cryptography through the Lens of Bibliometrics

Alexander I. Terekhov

Abstract Cryptography, which has a history going back many centuries, is currently experiencing a transition from the classical paradigm to a quantum one. Using bibliometrics, the dynamics of development and the ratio between three branches of cryptography—classical, postquantum, and quantum—in the period 1990–2020 are considered; the restructuring of the crypto-sphere in favor of the quantum paradigm since 2015 is noted. The world leaders in quantum cryptography research are industrialized countries, including the G7 group and China, and at the institutional level, leading universities, academic organizations, technology institutes, as well as large corporations, especially from Japan and the United States, and military research institutions, especially from the United States and China. The features of the quantum-cryptographic ecosystems of several countries are identified. It is shown that, in Russia, research is concentrated in the academic sector, universities and specialized organizations—the Academy of Cryptography of the Russian Federation, the Russian Quantum Center. By contrast with leading countries, the contribution of domestic corporations and small businesses is still limited. Geopolitical aspects of creating quantum-cryptographic security have been discussed. The Web of Science Core Collection database is used as a source for bibliometric analysis.

Research Trends and Collaboration Patterns in Quantum Internet: A Bibliometric Mapping Using Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace

Annu Paul, J. P., Rejina P V +3 more

IntroductionQuantum Internet has emerged as a transformative technological frontier, attracting increasing global research attention. Its development spans foundational physics, cryptography, network engineering, and applied technologies, demanding systematic evaluation of scholarly progress. ObjectiveThis study aims to present a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Quantum Internet research, identifying publication trends, influential contributors, collaborative networks, and evolving thematic directions. MethodData were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. The study examined publication growth, author and journal influence, country-level collaborations, bibliographic coupling, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evolution. ResultsFindings indicate steady growth in publications since 2016, peaking in 2024 with 130 documents. Leading contributors include Angela Sara Cacciapuoti, Marcello Caleffi, Laszlo Gyongyosi, and Stephanie Wehner, while prominent publication outlets are Physical Review Letters, Physical Review A, Scientific Reports, and New Journal of Physics. Country-level analysis highlights the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan as primary research hubs, with strong international collaborations. Network analyses reveal 15 author and 10 journal clusters, underscoring interdisciplinary connections. Bibliographic coupling and keyword co-occurrence identify critical themes such as quantum key distribution, entanglement distribution, quantum memory, blockchain, and cybersecurity, alongside emerging areas like quantum IoT and quantum machine learning. Thematic maps show a shift from theoretical constructs to application-driven studies, integrating artificial intelligence and advanced sensing. Trend analyses confirm growing attention to scalability, security, and interdisciplinary applications, though gaps remain in resource optimization, experimental validation, and integration with classical infrastructures. ConclusionsThis analysis provides a knowledge framework and practical insights into the intellectual and conceptual structure of Quantum Internet research. By mapping influential contributors, core themes, and research gaps, the study supports academics, policymakers, and industry in making strategic investments and advancing future research in this rapidly evolving field.

Overview of the Development of Quantum Communication Networks

XU Hua-xin

Quantum communication based on quantum mechanics is a secure communication technology, which can provide unconditional security between communication parties in principle. Recently, quantum communication technology and its practical engineering have been regarded by many counties and regions such as the US,European Union,China and Japan. With the engineering development of quantum communication technology,it has been progressing from point-to-point communications to network applications, including local area networks and wide area networks. Furthermore, global quantum communication is developing. In the review,we summarize in detail the development of the quantum communication networks built by various countries, and introduce the plans of quantum satellites.
