Abstract

We present a new planar SIS mixer for array applications in the 400-500 GHz range. The mixer consists of a double dipole antenna connnected to a pair of superconducting tunnel junctions by a novel tuning and matching structure. It is mounted in the focal plane of a silicon parabola collimating the broad double dipole beams into beams with f-numbers of /spl ap/13. Four mixers were built in an array configuration on a single substrate and two of them were tested. The receiver DSB noise temperatures are below 300 K in the 456-492 GHz range. The best results are 180 K and 163 K respectively at 473 GHz.

A planar quasi-optical SIS receiver suitable for array applications

A novel planar, quasi-optical SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) receiver operating at 230 GHz is described. The receiver consists of a 2*5 array of half-wave dipole antennas with ten niobium-aluminium-oxide-niobium SIS junctions on a quartz dielectric-filled parabola. The 1.2-GHz intermediate frequency is coupled from the mixer via coplanar strip transmission lines and 4:1 balun transformers. The receiver is operated at 4.2 K in a liquid-helium immersion cryostat. Accurate measurements of the performance of single receiver elements are reported. A mixer noise temperature of 148 K DSB, receiver noise temperature of 259 K DSB, and conversion loss of 10 dB into a matched load have been obtained.>

A planar, quasi-optical SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) receiver operating at 230 GHz is described. The receiver consists of a 2*5 array of half-wave dipole antennas with niobium-aluminum oxide-niobium SIS junctions on a quartz dielectric-filled parabola. The 1.4-GHz intermediate frequency is coupled from the mixer via coplanar strip transmission lines and 4:1 balun transformers. The receiver is operated at 4.2 K in a liquid helium immersion cryostat. Accurate measurements of the performance of single untuned array receiver elements are reported. A mixer noise temperature of 89 K DSB (double sideband), receiver noise temperature of 156 K DSB and conversion loss of 8 dB into a matched load have been obtained. This mixer noise temperature is approximately a factor of two larger than that of current state of the art waveguide mixers using untuned single junctions a the same frequency.>

A Superconducting Planar Integrated Receiver for the Frequency Range 430-480 GHz

S. V. Shitov, V. P. Koshelets, I.L. Lapitskaya +6 more

A planar receiver comprising a Josephson flux-flow oscillator (FF0), a double dipole antenna and a SIS mixer integrated on a single chip within an area of 3 x 3 mm has been realised in the frequency range of 400-500 GHz. RF tests have been performed at temperatures between 2 K and 4.2 K. A best DSB noise temperature of 595 K 20 K at 465 GHz was obtained for the receiver with the mixer pumped by the FFO. The width of the antenna beam has been measured referred to the input window of the cryostat and was about ± 4 degrees at the power level of about 20 dB. The power consumption of the whole device is estimated to be 20 p.W.

SIS-mixer development at SRON

J. Mees

Since several years waveguide and planar antenna SIS-mixers for space applications are developed at SRON in orderof ESA. Recent results show excellent mixer performance up to frequencies above the superconducting gap of Nb.Goal is the development of a 1THz-mixer. Best results show a receiver noise temperature of Taw=400K at 720GHz incase of the waveguide mixer and T„„=200K at 490GHz for the double dipole planar antenna mixer. We will presentthe status in the development of SIS-junctions, integrated tuning network, mixers and mounts.

Sis-mixers around the gap frequency

J. Mees

Since several years waveguide and planar antenna mixers with Nb-tunnel junctions are developed at the Space Research Organization Netherlands (SRON) for space applications. Recent results show excellent mixing performance up to frequencies above the superconducting gap of Nb. Goal is the development of an 1THz-mixer. Best results show a receiver noise temperature of Tps,-----310K at 708GHz for a waveguide mixer and TE,s„---200K at 480GHz for a double dipole planar antenna mixer. Due to on-chip tuning structures we obtained bandwidths up to 150GHz. We will present the current status in the development of SIS-junctions, integrated tuning network and mixers.

A Waveguide NbTiN SIS Mixer for THz Array Applications

In this paper we will present the design and realization of a double sideband SIS heterodyne mixer for the frequency range of 780-950 GHz. A NbTiN high Tc superconductor in combination with aluminum is used for a SIS junction tuning circuit. We use a double side waveguide probe with a fixed backshort tuner design which was optimized by means of a 3D EM-modeling software. Compact mechanical envelope of the mixer allows for a combination of several units in a focal plane array. We will present results of instantaneous bandwidth measurement for seven mixer units and compare it with theoretical predictions. We also present a heterodyne sensitivity test results for these mixers with the best achieved DSB mixer noise temperature of about 250 K (physical temperature 4.2 K) which is only several times higher than a quantum noise limit for these frequencies.
