Kerr nonlinearity and parametric amplification with an Al-InAs superconductor–semiconductor Josephson junction

Z. Hao, T. Shaw, Mehdi Hatefipour +5 more

Nearly quantum limited Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) are essential components in superconducting quantum circuits. However, higher order nonlinearities of the Josephson cosine potential are known to cause gain compression, therefore limiting scalability. In an effort to reduce the fourth order, or Kerr nonlinearity, we realize a parametric amplifier with an Al-InAs superconductor–semiconductor hybrid Josephson junction (JJ). We extract the Kerr nonlinearity of the Al-InAs JJ from two different devices and show that it is three orders of magnitude lower compared to an Al-AlOX junction with identical Josephson inductance. We then demonstrate a four-wave-mixing (4WM) parametric amplifier made with an Al-InAs junction that achieves more than 20 dB of gain and −119 dBm of compression power, which outperforms single resonant JPAs based on Al junctions.

Toward terahertz heterodyne detection with superconducting Josephson junctions

We report on the high-frequency mixing properties of ion irradiated YBa2Cu3O7 Josephson junctions. The frequency range, spanning above and below the characteristic frequencies fc of the junctions, permits a clear observation of the transition between two mixing regimes. The experimental conversion gain was found to be in good agreement with the prediction of the three-port model. Finally, we discuss the potential of the junctions to build a Josephson mixer operating in the terahertz frequency range.

Nonlinear mixer gain calculations for Josephson junctions

We have numerically solved the steady-state solutions of the initial value problem associated with a current-driven Josephson weak-link junction shunted by an ohmic resistance. The nonlinear mixing action of the junction leads to Shapiro steps in the DC response with step height in units of the mixing frequency. Mixer gains have been calculated with a wide range of parameter values and intrinsic chaos is observed whenever Shapiro steps are prevalent.>
