Abstract

Introduction Recently demonstrated integrated receiver [1] comprising a planar-antenna SIS mixer and a superconducting local oscillator based on FFO (Flux-Flow Oscillator), is limited in its frequency range by the SIS mixer as well as by the FFO. The coupling between FFO and mixer determines the effective bandwidth and could potentially be several hundreds of GHz. Recent development of all-Nb superconducting integrated receivers has demonstrated that the frequency of a single FFO can be tuned from 200 to 700 GHz [1],[2], i.e. up to the gap frequency of Nb. If the material with higher gap frequency (NbN for example) is used, the FFO can be running up to nearly two times this frequency, so up to 1200 GHz. However, the coupling of signal into SIS mixers with Nb tuning structures is found to be decreased rapidly above the gap frequency (about 700 GHz for Nb). This problem can be solved by using a normal metal such as aluminium for the coupling structures [3], [4]. In this contribution we present both calculated and experimental results of Nb-based SIS mixers in combination with a double dipole planar antenna for the highest possible frequencies. Special attention is paid

Phase-locked Local Oscillator for Superconducting Integrated Receiver

A Superconducting Integrated Receiver (SIR) comprises in a single chip a planar antenna combined with a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer, a superconducting Flux Flow Oscillator (FFO) acting as a Local Oscillator (LO) and a second SIS harmonic mixer (HM) for the FFO phase locking. In this report an overview of the FFO development and optimization is presented. In order to overcome temperature constraints and extend operation frequency of the fully Nb SIR we have developed and studied Nb-AlN-NbN circuits with a gap voltage Vg up to 3.7 mV and extremely low leak currents (Rj/Rn > 30). Continuous tuning of the frequency due to bending and overlapping of the Fiske steps and a possibility to phase lock the Nb-AlN-NbN FFO at any frequency in the range 350-750 GHz has been experimentally demonstrated. After optimization of the FFO design the free-running linewidth between 7 and 1.5 MHz has been measured in the frequency range 350 - 750 GHz, which allows to phase-lock from 50 to 95 % of the emitted FFO power. New designs of the FFO intended for further improvement of its parameters are under development, but even at the present state the Nb-AlN- NbN FFOs are mature enough for practical applications. These achievements enabled development of a 500 - 650 GHz integrated receiver for the Terahertz Limb Sounder (TELIS) project intended for atmosphere study and scheduled to fly on a balloon in 2008.

An integrated 500 GHz receiver with superconducting local oscillator

V. P. Koshelets, S. V. Shitov, Lyudmila V. Filippenko +6 more

An integrated quasioptical receiver consisting of a planar double-dipole antenna, SIS mixer and superconducting Flux-Flow Oscillator (FFO) with matching circuits has been designed, fabricated and tested in the frequency range 420-530 GHz. The integrated receiver is very suitable for space applications because of its low size, mass and power consumption. All components of the receiver are integrated on a 4 mm/spl times/4 mm/spl times/0.2 mm crystalline quartz substrate using a single Nb-AlO/sub x/-Nb trilayer. The successful operation of the integrated receiver comprising a number of new crucial elements has been demonstrated. A DSB noise temperature as low as 140 K at 500 GHz and a tuning range of more than 100 GHz have been obtained. A comparison of the FFO with conventional external LO has been performed.

The superconducting integrated receiver (SIR) comprising in one chip a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer and a phase-locked superconducting flux flow oscillator (FFO) is under development for the international project TELIS. To overcome temperature constraints and extend operation frequency of the SIR we have developed and studied Nb-AlN-NbN-Nb circuits with a gap voltage Vg up to 3.7 mV and extremely low leakage currents . Based on these junctions integrated microcircuits comprising FFO and harmonic mixer have been designed, fabricated and tested; the radiation from such circuits has been measured at frequencies up to 700 GHz. Employment of NbN electrode does not result in the appearance of additional noise. For example, FFO linewidth as low as 1 MHz was measured at 600 GHz, that allows us to phase lock up to 92% of the emitted by FFO power and realize very low phase noise about 90 dBc. Preliminary results demonstrated uncorrected DSB noise temperature of the Nb-AlN-NbN SIR below 250 K at frequencies around 600 GHz.

Optimization of the Phase-Locked Flux-Flow Oscillator for the submm Integrated Receiver

V. P. Koshelets, Pavel N. Dmitriev, An. B. Ermakov +5 more

The Superconducting Integrated Receiver (SIR) comprises in one chip a planar antenna integrated with an SIS mixer, a superconducting Flux Flow Oscillator (FFO) acting as Local Oscillator (LO) and a second SIS harmonic mixer (HM) for FFO phase locking. Free-running FFO linewidth well below 10 MHz is required to ensure phase-locked operation of an SIR. Comprehensive experimental study of the Nb-AlOx-Nb FFO linewidth and other main parameters has been carried out in order to achieve this goal. Essential dependence of the FFO linewidth on its width and idle region dimension has been found. It makes possible an optimization of the FFO design and selection of the best FFO parameters for practical operation of the SIR.

A flux-flow oscillator (FFO) based on unidirectional and viscous flow of magnetic vortexes in a long Josephson tunnel junction, is employed as a local oscillator.
